Tails Doll is an artificial copy of Tails created by Dr. Eggman, and appears as an unlockable character in Sonic R. One of the Doctor's more unusual creations, Tails Doll was allegedly constructed "to catch Sonic unawares". Aside from the red, gem-like power / control module dangling above its head, the Tails Doll is simply a stuffed animal.

Tails Doll has poor handling, average acceleration and average top speed. Its jumping abilities are quirky; it cannot jump very high, but is able to float for prolonged periods. Along with Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles, Tails Doll completes Sonic R's set of artificial copies for Team Sonic. Outside of small cameo roles, Tails Doll's debut is his only appearence to date.

Sonic Channel profile

Sonic Channel featured Japanese language profiles of the Sonic R characters; translated, Tails Doll's is as follows:

Tails Doll

As a last resort, Eggman manufactured this to catch Sonic unprepared. This, except for the power plant embedded in its head, is a mere stuffed animal, whose meager form nevertheless exhibits considerable ability in races due to its lightweight design. Still, it is also able to float in the air for a long time.

[Appearance requirements] Collect 5 tokens in Radical City in Grand Prix mode and finish better than fourth place to begin a one-on-one match with Tails doll. Win this race and Tails doll will become a possible choice on the character select screen.

Key Advice:

  • Get accustomed to the feel of the light steering.
  • Travel over the water completely without accident or deceleration? This is the only character able to do so.
  • Keep pushing the jump button to keep floating.

Other game appearances

Similar-looking dolls appear along with Sonic dolls and Knuckles dolls in Sonic Adventure as targets in E-102's first level, although these Tails dolls are inanimate and have no red jewels. In Lego Dimensions, Tails Doll has two cameos, firstly, he is quoted by Peter Venkman of the Ghostbusters when he dialogues with Sonic; Secondly, Tails Doll is one of the objects that comes out of the interdimensional portals in Marble Zone. In Sonic Mania, during the battle against Gachapandora, one of the miniatures present is a robotic version of Amy Rose with elements coming from Tails Doll.

Tails Doll appeared in Pinball Carnival Zone act 2 in Sonic Superstars.

Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW comics)

Tails Doll along with Metal Sonic and Metal Knuckles were temporally taken control of by Heavy King. The three of them kicked Dr. Eggman out of his fortress in Winter Caverns Zone and were sent by Heavy King to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds. Tails Doll repeatedly stalked Fang's team and later Amy and Mighty as a surveillance drone in order to get the yellow chaos emerald. The three minions of Heavy King later obtained the rest of the Chaos Emeralds, which forced Dr. Eggman to work with Sonic and his friends. When Eggman and the heroes returned to Winter Caverns Zone, while Tails and Eggman were devising a plan, Tails Doll unexpectedly and suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Before Tails Doll could do anything, Eggman got a hold of Tails Doll and used its antenna to take control back of Metal Knuckles and Metal Sonic. The robots then worked with Sonic's team along with Fang’s team to overthrow Heavy King.

It was later revealed that, in addition to being Eggman’s surveillance drone, Tails Doll also serves as Eggman’s cuddly toy.[1]
