Sonic R is the official album to the Sega Saturn game of the same name. As was the case for many video game soundtracks of the era, the album was only released in Japan, even though the title was developed by the European studio Traveller's Tales. Included in the track list are two exclusive remixes, as well as the vocal themes that pepper the stages of the title. Curiously, the instrumental versions are omitted from this release, although they are available on the game disc, which can be heard on any standard CD player. The enclosed booklet also includes commentary by Richard Jacques.

Though released seven months before the announcement for Sonic Adventure, the only known cover art for the Sonic R soundtrack features the redesigned Sonic the Hedgehog by Sonic Team artist Yuji Uekawa, although Sonic's shoes lack the thick soles of the finalized design. While it is possible that this was a re-release to help promote the new-look Sonic in time for the Sega Dreamcast to come out, there is no evidence that this album ever had a previous cover.

Similar to the small verses found on the Japanese game boxes to the original Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic CD and Sonic & Knuckles, the cover to the soundtrack of Sonic R contains a short verse relevant to the themes of the game. However, these brief lines are only on the album cover, with nothing similar on the game packaging.

In 2014 the soundtrack was re-released on the iTunes and Amazon MP3 store as Sonic R Original Soundtrack. The two remix tracks were replaced with extra instrumental tracks.
