Sonic the Hedgehog Boom is the first full-length soundtrack release connected to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. It was given to those who had preordered Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at select retailers, although the album contains no music from that game. The album features a selection of tracks from the US version of Sonic the Hedgehog CD and the Mega Drive version of Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball. Instead of being simple rips from the games, all of the songs are extended mixes. This includes the four Spinball tracks, which were recreated in CD quality.

While for years the full versions of these songs could only be heard on this release, certain extended musical cues were used in the 2011 re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog CD, and the first song Sonic Boom was later rereleased on the Sonic the Hedgehog CD Original Soundtrack 20th Anniversary Edition album as a "Bonus Track".
