The tropical island theme often occurs in the first levels of a game and has become very iconic of the Sonic series. This theme first appeared in Green Hill Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit).
Common features of this theme include palm trees, waterfalls, bright flowers, brown checkered walls, and badniks resembling animals from a tropical climate. In a level with a tropical island theme, the player may see the Moto Bug, Pata-Bata, Coconuts, E-01 Baby Kiki, or a Crabmeat. Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Advance 3 notably do not include first levels with this theme.
