Metal Knuckles appeared in Sonic R as a hidden opponent for Reactive Factory. It can be unlocked by getting the five Sonic Tokens of the course, and finish the race on first, second or third place. Once beaten, Metal Knuckles is added to the selection of playable characters. It is Knuckles' robotic counterpart, as Metal Sonic is the robotic counterpart of Sonic. It has an improved gliding ability, compared to Knuckles, and could rivalize with Super Sonic on a race.
