Dark Chao (ダークチャオ[2]) are relatively small, sentient creatures found in numerous Sonic the Hedgehog media. They are a type of Chao, and the "Dark" counterpart to Hero Chao.

Description
Dark Chao typically have the same body type as regular Chao. In their most basic form, they have black bodies with crimson tips on their limbs and a crescent moon-shaped mark on their chests similar to Knuckles. Their wings are shaped like bat wings, their tails are pointed, and their mood indicator is spiky, giving them a more demonic appearance compared to other Chao. The forms they can take depending on how their stats are raised are similar to those of a regular Chao, albeit with a more twisted look; for example, a Run-type Dark Chao bears a resemblance to Shadow whereas neutral Run-type Chao resemble Sonic.
Personality-wise, Dark Chao are typically violent and like to play pranks, while also favouring dark and mysterious places[3].
Game appearances
Sonic Adventure 2 / Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
In Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, a Chao will change into a different type of Chao when it reaches maturity. It will become a Dark Chao if it has been cared for primarily by Shadow, Dr. Eggman and/or Rouge, or repeatedly abused by Sonic, Tails and/or Knuckles, though feeding it Dark Fruit will also influence it into becoming a Dark Chao. The first time a Chao becomes a Dark Chao, the Dark Garden will be unlocked. If a Dark Chao has met the conditions for becoming a Chaos Chao, it will take on a more demonic appearance than the regular Chaos Chao.
Dark Chao cannot be entered into the Hero Race in Chao Race. A single Dark Chao also appears as a playable character in the mech shooting battles in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle's 2P Battle mode, piloting the Dark Chao Walker.
Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut
While Sonic Adventure did not originally feature Dark Chao, they were added to Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut. As the playable characters do not influence a Chao's alignment in this game, the player must feed it Dark Fruit during its child stage, which can be purchased from the Black Market in the Station Square Chao Garden, for it to mature into a Dark Chao.
Other games
Dark Chao typically make cameo appearances alongside other Chao in other games following Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure DX. In Sonic Heroes, a Dark Chao appears alongside a neutral Chao riding the Chao Balloon in the Special Stage. In the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series, Dark Chao primarily appear among the audience in certain events, and Sonic Runners features Dark Chao as equippable Buddies. In Team Sonic Racing, a Dark Chao appears as part of the collective playable group of Chao in Team Rose, and together they drive the Chao Pod.
