Hero Chao (ヒーローチャオ^[2]) are relatively small, sentient creatures found in numerous Sonic the Hedgehog media. They are a type of Chao, and the "Hero" counterpart to Dark Chao.

Description

Hero Chao typically have the same body type as regular Chao. In their most basic form, they have white bodies with sky blue tips on their limbs and a pale yellow oval patch on their bellies. Their wings are shaped like angel wings and their mood indicator is shaped like a halo, giving them a more angelic appearance compared to other Chao. The forms they can take depending on how their stats are raised are radically different from regular Chao and even Dark Chao.

Personality-wise, Hero Chao are typically good-natured Chao who are warm, kind and polite^[3].

Game appearances

Sonic Adventure 2 / Sonic Adventure 2: Battle

In Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, a Chao will change into a different type of Chao when it reaches maturity. It will become a Hero Chao if it has been cared for primarily by Sonic, Tails and/or Knuckles, or repeatedly abused by Shadow, Dr. Eggman and/or Rouge, though feeding it Hero Fruit will also influence it into becoming a Hero Chao. The first time a Chao becomes a Hero Chao, the Hero Garden will be unlocked. If a Hero Chao has met the conditions for becoming a Chaos Chao, it will take on a more angelic appearance than the regular Chaos Chao.

Hero Chao cannot be entered into the Dark Race in Chao Race.

Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut

While Sonic Adventure did not originally feature Hero Chao, they were added to Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut. As the playable characters do not influence a Chao's alignment in this game, the player must feed it Hero Fruit during its child stage, which can be purchased from the Black Market in the Station Square Chao Garden, for it to mature into a Hero Chao.

Other games

Hero Chao typically make cameo appearances alongside other Chao in other games following Sonic Adventure 2 and Sonic Adventure DX. In the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series, Hero Chao primarily appear among the audience in certain events, and Sonic Runners features Hero Chao as equippable Buddies. In Team Sonic Racing, a Hero Chao appears as part of the collective playable group of Chao in Team Rose, and together they drive the Chao Pod.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a Chao spirit can be enhanced into a Hero Chao spirit when it reaches Lv.99. It comes with the effect "Fast Final Smash Meter", which increases how quickly a fighter's Final Smash meter will be charged when equipped.
