Personality and traits

Zavok is a merciless, serious, ferocious and cruel being. He often deploys graphical threats of death and destruction and has little tolerance for failure. Power-hungry and ever focused on his goals, Zavok does not let anything stand in his way. Despite his brutish intensiveness, Zavok keeps a very calm demeanor even if his temper is flared up, and has a penchant for quick-thinking, which is what you would expect from a leader. He's quite cunning and intelligent, which is shown by him studying his opponents in advance and knowing how to use a situation to his advantage. He knew he would learn more about Sonic by letting Zazz fight him, regardless of the outcome, and quickly formulated a plan to use Tails to his advantage when his team accidentally caught him instead of Sonic. He is also manipulative, using praise and compliments to motivate Zeena into attacking Sonic, and sending Sonic into disarray with psychological taunts.

Zavok is a true monster at heart, as he relishes in inflicting physical and psychological pain and killing others, even having no qualms about causing global genocide for his own gain or personal reasons. He is also very vengeful and will seize any opportunity for retribution, such as using Dr. Eggman's Extractor to destroy Sonic's world to make him pay for his abuse, and plotting to turn Tails against Sonic to spite him for humiliating him.

As the leader of the Zeti race, Zavok is regarded as their strongest warrior thanks to all the teaching he has received from Master Zik, making him a certified force to be reckoned with. He boasts superhuman strength and all manner of close-combat techniques and pyrokinetic abilities. As a last resort, he is able to unleash his full strength and become super-sized. Like all Zeti, Zavok has the ability to manipulate magnetic fields, allowing him to control electronics, which he does to Eggman's Badniks.

Game appearances

Sonic Lost World

As the leader of the Deadly Six, Zavok's presence is already made aware to the player as soon as the first cutscene to feature the Zeti, in which Eggman teaches them how to make Badniks, and Zavok orders Zazz to go after Sonic as a means of learning more about his enemy. In a later cutscene, he speaks up against Eggman after the genius berates him and his kind for bringing in defective animals. After Eggman loses the Cacophonic Conch thanks to Sonic's impulsiveness, Zavok orders his kind to take control of all of the Badniks and get revenge on the doctor. After taking over his fortress at Lava Mountain, he and Master Zik devise a plan to suck Sonic's world dry completely with the Extractor, and use all the stolen life energy to make themselves stronger.

Later, after his and Master Zik's plan to capture Sonic and turn him into a robot results in Tails being captured instead, Zavok chides the other Zeti for the mistake, but then thinks of turning Tails into a robot instead to psychologically break Sonic. He eventually interacts with Sonic after the hedgehog has already taken care of all the other Zeti in their respective Zones to fight him personally and to taunt him about the impending doom of Tails and the world beneath the Lost Hex. After Sonic humiliates him in battle, he goes ahead with roboticizing Tails, only to leave him unsupervised and allowing the fox to keep his free will.

In Lava Mountain, Zavok makes another demand to Sonic to give up and join his friend as a robot slave, then sends Tails after him when he refuses; but is then forced to retreat when Tails turns against him. After Sonic defeats the other Zeti again, Zavok becomes fed up with the hedgehog and attempts to destroy him once and for all, becoming giant-sized in his final battle. Despite poweing himself up, he is ultimately defeated and is seen falling into the pool of lava beneath him.

Sonic Runners

Zavok appeared during the storyline of the "Zazz Raid" event in Sonic Runners, where Zazz asked him for help on defeating Sonic, to which Zavok tells him to simply keep on fighting. After Zazz leaves, Master Zik points out that Zazz will never be able to beat Sonic no matter how hard he tries. Zavok is fully aware of this, and is simply using Zazz to collect more intel on Sonic so that one day, the Deadly Six will be able to destroy him once and for all.

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (series)

Zavok appears in both versions of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as a playable guest character exclusive to Boxing. He later appeared in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and Sonic at the Olympic Games (2020).

Sonic Forces

Zavok's battle with Sonic in the Death Egg.

Zavok also appears in Sonic Forces as one of the illusory villains created by Infinite through the powers of the Phantom Ruby, and is also a boss fought by Modern Sonic. After Sonic's defeat, Zavok served as Sonic's guard during his tenure aboard the Death Egg as a prisoner, eventually coming to his cell to execute him by jettisoning him into outer space. After his defeat, Zavok disappears. Hordes of Zavok illusions are also fought by the Resistance during the climax at the Eggman Empire Fortress.

Sonic Forces: Speed Battle

Zavok is featured as a playable character in the smartphone tie-in game Sonic Forces: Speed Battle as of the 1.0.1 update released on November 1st, 2017. He is a Super Rare character with the lowest speed of any character in the game, but has the highest strength stat tied with Big the Cat. His usable items include the Fireball, Fire Boost and Explosive Mine.

Team Sonic Racing

In Team Sonic Racing, Zavok appears as the Power Type member of Team Eggman, driving the Road Dragoon. In the Team Adventure mode, his presence alluded to by Big and Silver's suspicions, Zavok suddenly emerges from the shadows and willingly accepts Eggman's invite to join his team, following his orders with no explanation why. At first, he is tasked with stealing the Ultimate Energy Engine from Dodon Pa, but when that plan is uncovered by the heroes, he is given the assignment of kidnapping Dodon Pa himself. The digital instruction manual implies he no longer has ties with the Deadly Six.Media:TeamSonicRacing Steam manual.pdf[2]

Sonic the Hedgehog (IDW comics)

Zavok and the other members of the Deadly Six were brought to Sonic's World from Lost Hex by Dr. Starline, through the use of the Warp Topaz. They were brought here to help the Eggman Empire deal with the problems caused by the Metal Virus. Very quickly Zavok and the other Zeti took control over the situation and kicked Dr. Eggman and Starline out of their own flying fortress. Zavok realized now they could spread the Metal Virus more and puppet the Zombots with their Zeti tech manipulation ability. They also now have control over the Chaos Emeralds, which they use to increase their powers. The Zeti were now in-control of the whole world. Dr. Eggman and Sonic were forced to make an alliance once again to take back the Chaos Emeralds from Zavok and the Deadly Six.[3] In the end, Sonic and Silver managed to both go super and stop Zavok, but the Deadly Six leader was left on the planet.[4]

Zavok was sent to Everhold Prison but was soon freed by the returning Dr. Starline. Zavok teamed up with him while the other members of the Deadly Six were missing. This alliance also included Rough the Skunk, Tumble the Skunk and Mimic. They worked together to take over one of Eggman's bases. At one point Zavok surprisingly complemented his new allies, saying while they are no Deadly Six, they're adept. Zavok then confronts Starline about his and Eggman's reliance on machines. Zavok views strong warriors over machines, as they have flexibility, passion and ingenuity. While robots in his eyes are only fine tools. Zavok also admitted Starline's original plan for him and the Metal Virus was solid. He only made one mistake while trying to right Eggman's wrongs. He warns Starline that while he has great potential, he should not limit himself by trying to become Dr. Eggman.[5][6]

Zavok and Mimic later saw video of Starline planning to take out all of them later. Zavok then formulates his own plan to double-cross Starline. The next day, while Starline was hacking Eggman's systems, Zavok and Mimic begin their double-cross. Zavok wanted to use this as an opportunity to carve out his own territory in this world, but Starline slipped away and the whole building they were in came crashing down once Eggman arrived. Zavok escaped the flames to search for the other Zeti and get revenge.[7][8] Once Zavok had found them he discussed the next course of action with Master Zik. They decide to form an assault on the Restoration. This plan didn't work out too well for them. Sonic and his friends managed to defeat the Zeti once more and send them on a rocket back to Lost Hex.[9][10]
