Sticks the Badger (スティックス・ザ・バジャー)[1] is one of the main characters of the Sonic Boom series. She is a wacky anthropomorphic jungle badger who is a force of nature in every way, and considers Amy Rose to be her best friend. She is also the great-great-granddaughter of Jebediah Badger, founder of Hedgehog Village.[3]

When she was first seen via concept art, many fans initially mistook her as a supposed Sonic Boom incarnation of Marine the Raccoon due to how she looks remarkably similar to the latter, until she was revealed to be a new character to the franchise. She also looks similar to Aika from Skies of Arcadia, and even uses boomerangs just like her. Humorously, both characters and their franchises crossed over in Worlds Unite.

Sticks holds the honour of being the first and currently only character not created by Sonic Team nor from the main series to get a profile on Sonic Channel.

Character conception

Sticks was conceptualized for the purpose of rounding off the cast of Sonic Boom by being featured alongside the core ensemble of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy, bringing a quirky personality and prespective to the team dynamic and adding an endless amount of humor. According to Hiroyuki Miyazaki, Chief Content Officer for the Sonic Brand, Sega of America, "Sticks is a significant addition to the Sonic Boom universe and the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise".[4]

According to Bill Freiberger, the impetus for creating Sticks is very often to deliver his message, and represents his point of view and belief system, and, in his opinion, she brings a healthy dose of cynicism to the series to counter the heroism of her friends. This is why Sticks will say something absurd, only to be proven correct in the end.[5]

Personality and traits

Sticks is energetic, free-spirited and primal like a wild animal. Due to living an isolated life in the forest from a young age, she has developed sharp animal instincts and is a fearsome combatant, a tenacious hunter, and will enter a feral frenzy when she is angry. However, this has also made her very kooky and obtuse, and thus she thinks everyone else is living in an alternate world different from the normal one, something that unnerves friends and enemies alike. She recognises that she is a kook, but she doesn't like having herself and her ideas written off as crazy by default (as she often turns out to be right).

Living in the wilderness has also made her socially uncalibrated and outrageously paranoid, especially of technology because it "can't be trusted". She avoids it as much as possible, even refusing to wear a Communicator like her friends. She is very superstitious and senses danger and conspiracies everywhere, especially when she suspects the government of being behind a lot of shady activities, including mind-controlling the public, and often thinks about toppling it. As such, she's always prepared for even the oddest situations.

Whereas Amy's weapon of choice is the Piko Piko Hammer, Sticks' is boomerangs. She can throw boomerangs with absolute precision and without fail, including makeshift boomerangs made from things such as ladies and robot parts. Even without her weapons, she has martial arts and decent hand-to-hand combat skills as backup.

Game appearances

Sonic Boom

In Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, Sticks resides on Bygone Island while the rest of the team dealt with Lyric. She would offer to trade any Shinies they have collected for Crowns. After Lyric was defeated, Sticks joined her team's celebration in the Village, where she got a robot part from Amy, which she planned to use as a spatula.

In the two 3DS titles Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal and its sequel Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice, Sticks is a playable character, and her personality is more in-line with the TV series. In both games, she is capable of throwing boomerangs at distant targets, and can even control their trajectory mid-flight. In Shattered Crystal, she joins the team when the heroes rescue her from a landslide and they tell her that Lyric has kidnapped Amy. In Fire & Ice, Sticks was sent to set up monitors by Tails when she meets D-Fekt, an Eggman Robot with nearly limitless magnetic powers who sought to keep Team Sonic from closing the emerging fissures, though she finds him to be irresistibly cute despite being warned how dangerous he is.

She is also a playable character in Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, purchasable with 50 Red Star Rings. She has the special power "Protected Combo", which prevents the player's combo from resetting when running into enemies and hazards.

Main series

Although she was created for the Sonic Boom franchise, Sticks has made appearances in a few games in the main series. She was added to Sonic Runners as a playable Speed Type character who had a Distance and Animal Bonus by 37% and, like all Speed characters, could perform a triple jump.

She has also appeared in both versions of Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as a playable guest character exclusive to Archery.

She is mentioned in Sonic Frontiers along with Cream the Rabbit by Amy at the end of the game as the heroes state their future plans.

In other media

Sonic Boom (TV series)

As one of the main characters, Sticks has primarily featured in the Sonic Boom television series, where she hangs out with Team Sonic to take part in activities with them and help them foil the evil schemes of Dr. Eggman. Sticks has had a few episodes revolving around herself, such as one where she keeps a slime-spewing robot dog named Buster as a pet, one where she wins one of Mayor Fink's "Awardy Awards" and Amy helps her dress formally for the ceremony, and one where Amy tries to sell her stuff and it's revealed she has a cave full of villainous Froglodytes in her burrow.

In Season 2, Sticks discovers that her great-great-grandfather Jebediah Badger is the founder of the village, and it was originally called Badgervile. Amy tells Sticks that Jebediah Badger never gave up the land, which means she is the owner of the village. She decides to name it Hedgehog Village after Amy.[3]

Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie comics)

Sticks primarily featured in the short-lived Sonic Boom comic based on the TV series, but she played a major role in the Worlds Unite crossover. X, Zero and Axl, three androids known as Maverick Hunters (from the Mega Man X series) arrive in the Sonic Boom universe and request Sticks' help, to which the badger agrees while dragging Comedy Chimp and Fastidious Beaver with her and using one of Eggman's machines to travel to the main Sonic universe and unite with the other heroes. During the battle against the Deadly Six, Sticks is knocked into a Genesis Portal by Zomom which transports her to the Street Fighter universe, and there, she gains Chun-Li's trust and brings some new allies to the main Sonic universe with her. When Xander Payne resets everything, Sticks is one of the few characters to remember the events of the crossover, which she then tells her friends in her home universe about.
