Metal Harbor | Pumpkin Hill

Green Forest is the fifth stage in the Hero storyline of Sonic Adventure 2 and the third stage playable with Sonic. It represents Sonic's hurrying through the forest to find Amy and Tails before the Prison Island blows up.

Plot

After a quick battle with Shadow that ends in a draw for both stories’ sake, Sonic overhears Eggman urging Shadow to leave the island before it explodes. Realizing that his friends Amy and Tails are in danger, Sonic leaves Shadow behind and races through Green Forest to find and rescue his friends before they are all killed.

Level layout

Appearance

Green Forest is a forest / jungle like themed level, with thick green vegetation and platforms shaped like half pipes made of tree trunks. It is located in the forest on the outskirts of the GUN base of Prison Island.

The major gimmick of this level is the elastic vines that transport Sonic from one platform section to the other. In addition, the level also has an 8 minute time limit.

Other level specific objects are greenery of various sorts, including red anthuriums, water puddles, vines that can be grinded on and small red mushrooms Sonic can pick up.

Walkthrough

Sonic first starts in a tree trunk platform shaped like a half-pipe and at the end he’s launched to a larger platform. Here the way branches into two options, to the left way up some moving platforms and a long tunnel by keeping forward past the enemies. The two tracks will meet at another tree trunk platform, where the first Point Marker is.

Past this, there’s an elastic vine, which will take Sonic to a tree section. There are two paths to take here, the highest corridor filled with GUN robots and the bottom one. The two meet at the end of the latter and a spring will take Sonic to another vine that in turn leads to yet another tree section, a loop and to a tree tunnel. Inside, it’s divided in three major level heights and on the top one there’s a raised platform behind where Sonic’s Ancient Light upgrade is. To the front there’s a tight hallway that leads to the second Point Marker.

After this there’s another tree trunk shaped like a half-pipe, a vine and a large platform. There are a stack of three containers to the right, hiding a lower room that after a trail of rings will lead to a second large platform. Back on the first platform there is a set of moving platforms and past them, there's the second large platform mentioned before, where an ancient ruin on a low left edge is, which leads to some platforms above, and further down there’s the third Point Marker.

Past this there’s a loop and an upwards path to climb the tree, but there’s also a ledge below it with some ring boxes and at the top there’s the fourth Point Marker.

After this there’s yet another tree trunk shaped like a half-pipe, a vine that will drop Sonic downwards and that will reach even lower by pressing X and be able to pop the two balloons. Beyond there’s a platform with raised arches and at the end the fifth Point Marker.

Past this there’s another tree trunk section, a loop and another tree trunk section. A vine will take Sonic to the tail end of the stage, which is composed by a number of moving platforms and some will sink below the water level. At the end there are some springs, which will take Sonic to the Goal platform.

Hard Mode

At the beginning, the left branch doesn't have a proper ending anymore, and a pit with Beetles is there instead, though it's possible to reach the platform beyond by jumping and using the Homing Attack.

At the tree tunnel section, some of the dash panels are missing, and its one of the only situations where the Spin Dash is as useful as in the classics, since the half loop is not scripted. The Ancient Light upgrade is not present either.

Past the second Point Marker, the half pipe tree trunk has spikes along the way. After the fourth Point Marker, this situation repeats.

The last section doesn't change much, besides some rotating spikes, the platforms sinking faster and the height gaps between platforms being bigger.

Other versions

Green Forest shares its setting and level objects with Shadow's White Jungle, but the latter is far more mystic themed than the former. It's of no wonder, since both stages are located at the Prison Island forest located at the outskirts of the GUN base. It's also here, in a square platform with the same setting that the first Sonic VS Shadow boss battle takes place.

Trivia

Information icon.svg
Trivia sections are bad
Try and incorporate this information into the main article. See the manual of style to find out why.

  • In the Dreamcast version, there are 21 small animals in the level, even though Sonic's counter is supposed to top out at 20. After the twentieth animal, the game will give an extra life and the number will blink red like usual; when the twenty-first is subsequently collected, an additional life is awarded and the counter (which remains 20) will blink red again as well.
  • During story mode, this level has an opening cutscene that shows Sonic reacting to Eggman's announcement of the bomb. Sonic has just completed the first fight against Shadow, and listens from the battle arena, which is represented in the stage as the large platform just before the lost Chao, about halfway through the stage. After Sonic realizes he has to escape, he runs off to the level's actual start, which is backwards from that point and causes the journey to be much longer than it would be if he could start from the arena.
