Contents

Plot

After discovering that Tails was awarded a Chaos Emerald directly following the events of Sonic Adventure, Rouge goes to track him down on the highway, on her white convertible.

Level layout

Appearance

Route 280 is alike to TailsRoute 101, but the track itself is tighter and meanders more than Tails' stretch of highway, with gaps in the road and open parts of walls that lead to falling off the track entirely.

Other versions

Route 280 and Tails's Route 101 share the same kart gameplay, mission setting and level themes, although the former is more dangerous and harder to beat than the latter. It's of no wonder, since both are located at the highway outskirts of the city.

There are similarities with TailsMission Street and Shadow’s Radical Highway as well, like the roads and respective walls, the Golden Gate styled bridge, billboards and sharp bend signs.

Gameplay

Unlike Rouge's other stages, Route 280 is a kart racing stage, like TailsRoute 101. The gameplay is the same as well but with the difference of her convertible being faster and being harder to steer.

The controls for the stage are straightforward. Use A to accelerate; when turning, tap A then hold it down to start a powerslide, which is useful on corners. You can stop sliding by releasing the analog stick for a second. Y activates a 5-second boost, which is received for every twenty rings collected.

Checkpoint requirements and ring count

Checkpoint Rings Time (s) Time (s) (Hard Mode)
#1 68 60 60
#2 58 90 75
#3 58 90 70

Kart Race minigame

If this level is beaten before Route 101, the Kart Race minigame will become available; if it is beaten after Route 101 the 2P Kart Race minigame will become available.

Trivia

  • Route 280 is named after Interstate 280, a north-south Interstate Highway in the San Francisco Bay Area of Northern California, which connects San Jose and San Francisco, running along just to the west of the cities of San Francisco Peninsula for most of its route.
