Personality and traits

Black Doom is over two thousand years old and is the hive mind intelligence of the Black Arms.[1] He is one of the most evil foes Sonic or Shadow has ever met. He loves to kill things and eat humans. He enjoys manipulating others into doing his bidding with his psychic abilities. He can get inside of people's heads and show them memories of the past.[2] He is an expert of Chaos Control and can use his third eyeMedia:Shadow GC US manual.pdf[3] (called Doom's Eye) to watch others or communicate long distance.

History

Like all self-respecting villains, Black Doom's objective is to conquer the world with the aid of the Chaos Emeralds. However, as with many characters from the Sonic games, information about Black Doom's past is spotty at best. By his own testimony, Black Doom has lived for at least 2,000 years, since he claims responsibility for having planting the Glyphic Canyon temple-ships on Sonic's world (Shadow the Hedgehog (game), Sky Troops cutscene).

50 years prior to Shadow the Hedgehog, Black Doom made a bargain with Gerald Robotnik during the work on Project Shadow. He and Gerald created the Ultimate Lifeform - Shadow - ostensibly in order to expand Gerald's research, although Black Doom's ulterior motive was to create an agent who would one day retrieve the Chaos Emeralds.[4] Shadow was created from Black Doom's blood, making the two of them linked through a psychic connection.

When the Black Comet returns to the inner solar system 50 years later, Black Doom appears before Shadow at the beginning of the game as a hologram projected by Doom's Eye, to inform Shadow that "the day of reckoning" has arrived. Black Doom instructs Shadow throughout the game to retrieve the seven Chaos Emeralds for him, although whether Shadow pays any attention or not is for the player to decide.

As Shadow traveled on his journey, Black Doom revealed more about himself and his plans: his motive for collecting the seven Chaos Emeralds was to teleport their home, the Black Comet, down to Earth using Chaos Control. (The Black Comet's velocity wasn't fast enough to pass through the Earth's atmosphere by itself). According to Black Doom, he isn't trying to kill the humans; he is trying to bring salvation to them. His true intention for humans is to enslave them and have them serve as an energy source for the Black Arms, something they could not obtain while the Black Comet was in space.

As Sonic the Hedgehog and friends tries to stop Black Doom from taking over the world and Shadow from giving him the Chaos Emeralds, they are paralyzed by a special gas inside the Black Comet. Black Doom then reveals his true intentions about using humans as an "energy source"; they would become food for the Black Arms' larvae. Shadow and the others are shocked by Black Doom's goals. As everyone stands paralyzed about to be devoured by Black Doom's offspring, Shadow starts remembering about his past and about things that have been going on throughout the game. He then stands up in order to confront Black Doom once and for all. Meanwhile, the members of the Chaotix Detective Agency are in the Space Colony ARK, trying to reactivate an old program left behind by Gerald. Eventually, they are successful in beaming it down to Shadow (after Charmy Bee headbutts the machine). The video reveals that Gerald created Shadow to defeat the Black Arms by destroying the Black Comet with the Eclipse Cannon. This gives Shadow the motivation to stand up and defeat Black Doom. Before Shadow can do anything however, Black Doom uses Chaos Control and transforms into his more monstrous form, Devil Doom. Shadow uses the Chaos Emeralds that Black Doom left behind and transforms into Super Shadow.

Devil Doom was defeated by Super Shadow, who used Chaos Control to send the Black Comet and all the Black Arms inside to space, where the Black Comet was finally destroyed by the Eclipse Cannon.[5] As for Black Doom, he was seen falling down towards Earth below, and was presumed dead by Shadow and the rest of the world. He had survived the battle but had to recover in secret. He hid himself onboard the ARK and began planning a new Black Arms invasion. Once the Time Eater appeared and created White Space, Black Doom's plans were accelerated. He told control over White Space and created the Black Moon to hide himself in. He began molding Shadow into the perfect warrior for him to control by allowing him to unlock his Doom Powers. Once Shadow unlocked all of his new abilities, Black Doom allowed him to enter the Black Moon to confront him. Black Doom unleashed all of his power and transformed further into Neo Devil Doom in the battle but he was no match for the Ultimate Lifeform. Black Doom was defeated once more, but Rouge speculated that the Black Arms will come back again.[6]

Other game appearances

Black Doom and Doom's Eye had cards in Sonic Rivals. He is mentioned in Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood and Sonic Frontiers.

Boss Fight

The boss fight under GUN Fortress.

One of three potential last bosses of Shadow the Hedgehog's normal story, Black Doom is fought in routes where Shadow has taken a more GUN-friendly route through the game; as such, he appears after Final Haunt (Hero), Cosmic Fall (Hero), and GUN Fortress (Hero).

Black Doom has numerous abilities which make him a fearsome foe for those who would dare challenge him. On top of his numerous cutscene-demonstrated strategic abilities (Chaos Control, levitation, telepathy, Tikal-style time projection), Doom also possesses an array of brutal tactical attacks, including flaming meteors and energy slashes.

Devil Doom

Sonic Retro emblem.svg Main articles: Devil Doom and Neo Devil Doom

Devil Doom is the ultimate form of Black Doom, using the energy he drained out of the very planet itself. Mutated beyond belief, the only trace of Black Doom in this creature is Doom's Eye, which also happens to be the weak point. He has two heads in the image of a gargoyle, with a mouth resembling Black Bull's, and roots at the bottom of him. This gives him the slight resemblance of an uprooted plant. Devil Doom is blind, and needs Doom's Eye to see. Which means the two headed gargoyle has no eyes, but Doom's Eye will exchange between heads to give them sight. Devil Doom's skin is red. He is attached to the Black Comet, can breathe fire, and manipulate objects or portions of the comet to use as weapons against Super Shadow. The background of this fight is the same as the background for Metal Overlord, the differences being a red sky instead of blue, and a city to replace the fog.

Theme songs

In Shadow the Hedgehog, Black Doom had one character-specific theme song: an instrumental piece that played during boss battles with him in the standard story (not including the Devil Doom fight). This song was simply called "Black Doom".
