- Not to be confused with Rexxon, the sea serpent in Sonic Spinball.
Rexon[1], called Zaura (ザウラ) in the Japanese manual[2], is a Badnik from the 16-bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 found in Hill Top Zone. It is a pink plesiosaur-like creature that appears in the lava. They pop up and shoot fireballs from their heads. Once you destroy their heads, you can stand on their pink bodies in the lava like stepping stones.
There is a chance that the game may crash when destroying a Rexon's head. This is caused by conflicts in the code that causes the game to jump to a section of code earlier than it was meant to jump to, resulting in invalid opcodes being processed and an eventual crash. This would be fixed in REV02 of the game, included in Sonic Classics, though it's possible to fix this by modifying the game's code.
This badnik makes a return in Sonic Mania's Lava Reef Zone, where they will once again pop out of lava to attack the player. This time, the player can ride one of the walker mechs over a Rexon to destroy it completely, body and all. Doing this earns the player the "Without a Trace" achievement/trophy.
