Submarine Eggman (サブマリンエッグマン)[1] is the fifth boss of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, appearing at the end of Hill Top Zone.

Strategy

This boss is rather simple: the player just has to know what they're doing. The boss arena consists of three islands: one on the left, one in the middle, and one on the right of the screen. In between these islands are two lava pits. These lava pits are where Dr. Eggman will pop out in his heat-resistant submarine and shoot a small fireball at the player. Afterwards, he will submerge back into the lava, with two fireballs igniting the grass on both sides of the lava pit, and resurface from the lava pit closest to the player. The player should simply hit Eggman twice when he appears, avoiding all flaming projectiles and the burning grass.

If the player is really risky (or has a Shield), they can hit Eggman eight times in the first shot; just jump on him as he comes up. Doing this will, inevitably, land the player on the lava and lose Rings or Shield. When the boss is defeated, the player will go deep underground into Mystic Cave Zone.
