- Back to: References to Sonic.
The success of Sonic the Hedgehog resulted in the character becoming one of the world's most-recognizable icons and an integral element of Western pop culture. As such, he has appeared in a number of video games outside of the Sonic franchise, including those developed by other companies.
The game's success also kickstarted the mascot platformer genre, inspiring numerous other companies to develop similar games starring an anthropomorphic hero. Some games only take inspiration from the character himself, like High Seas Havoc, Aero the Acrobat, and Jazz Jackrabbit, while some titles leaned more into the series' trademark speedy gameplay, like Bubsy, Awesome Possum, James Pond 3, Tiny Toon Adventures: Buster's Hidden Treasure, Superfrog, and Big Nose Freaks Out, among many others. Additionally, a slew of unlicensed Sonic games (like the infamous Somari) were produced to capitalize on the character's popularity.
This inspiration is not limited to large commercial projects, as a number of smaller titles and Sonic the Hedgehog fangames have paid direct homage to the character's older games. Titles like Freedom Planet and Spark the Electric Jester feature gameplay designed to pay tribute to older Mega Drive entries in Sega's main franchise, while games like Sonic Robo Blast 2 and Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart have reinterpreted classic Sonic into entirely new forms.
