Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, known as Dairantou Smash Brothers for Nintendo 3DS (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ for Nintendo 3DS) in Japan, is the fourth in a series of fighting games featuring Nintendo characters. It's the first time the series is available on a handheld system. It was released alongside a Wii U version. Sonic the Hedgehog returns as a veteran character in this update, and is joined by newcomer third-party guests Mega Man, Pac-Man, Ryu, Cloud Strife, and Bayonetta. This game also supports amiibo, including the Sonic and Bayonetta amiibo.

Inclusion of Sonic the Hedgehog

The fighter select screen with all fighters unlocked. DLC fighters are on their own page.

On 1 October 2013, it was announced on a Nintendo Direct that Sonic the Hedgehog would return as a playable character in the game. Unlike in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Sonic is immediately available from the start.

In addition, the Green Hill Zone stage returns from Brawl in the 3DS version and is also available from the start, and now has an "Ω Form" that changes its layout to a flat platform similar to the Final Destination stage. Shadow the Hedgehog reprises his role as an Assist Trophy, slowing down time with Chaos Control for everyone except the player who summoned him.

Eggrobo makes an appearance as an enemy in the 3DS-exclusive mode Smash Run. Eggrobos will float in the air and try to keep their distance from players, attacking with a barrage of laser shots or a single powerful laser.

On 3 February 2016, Mii Fighter costumes based on Tails and Knuckles were released as part of the final wave of paid DLC alongside fellow Sega character Bayonetta. The Tails costume is compatible with Mii Gunners, while the Knuckles costume is compatible with Mii Brawlers.

As a fighter

Sonic retains almost all of the moves he had in Brawl, and like every other non-DLC character in the game, he now has multiple variations of his special moves that the player can choose to use when playing matches with customization turned on. His special moves are as follows:

  • Neutral special:
    • Default: Homing Attack. Sonic spins in mid-air for a second, and then launches towards the back of the nearest enemy in an arc. The move can be completed faster by pressing B, albeit at the cost of accuracy. Once used, Sonic cannot use this move again until he touches the ground.
    • Custom 1: Stomp. Instead of moving towards a target, Sonic goes straight down, meteor smashing the opponent.
    • Custom 2: Surprise Attack. A faster variant of the Homing Attack, albeit with less power and range.
  • Side special:
    • Default: Spin Dash. Sonic starts Spin Dashing on the ground or mid-air. The longer the B button is held down, the bigger the charge, the faster Sonic will go, and the more he'll move for until he has to stop. When the move is starting, on the ground, Sonic will move backwards for a small bit. After being activated, Sonic will perform a small hop and will only start spinning when he touches the ground. Once spinning, it's possible to switch directions without losing speed. Easily combos into one of his aerial attacks.
    • Custom 1: Hammer Spin Dash. Has a larger hop at the beginning, with the descending part of the arc having burying capabilities.
    • Custom 2: Burning Spin Dash. The hop is non-existent, but Sonic is on fire. Has shorter hops out of the move.
  • Up Special:
    • Default: Spring Jump. When activated, a red spring spawns under Sonic, and he's sent flying upwards, the spring staying there for around three seconds if the move is used on the ground. This move is mostly used for recovery, as it doesn't normally cause damage, however, if it's activated in mid-air, the spring becomes a projectile and tumbles downward, which can cause some minor damage. Once used, Sonic cannot use any special moves until he lands.
    • Custom 1: Double Spring. Sonic can pull out two springs, but gains much less altitude.
    • Custom 2: Springing Headbutt. Slightly shorter altitude, but has the added ability to hit opponents on the way up.
  • Down Special:
    • Default: Spin Charge. Like his Side Special, except it's charged like in the classic games by mashing the B button while Down is held. This move also lacks the minor backwards movement and small hop at the start.
    • Custom 1: Auto-Spin Charge. Removes the need to repeatedly press the B button in order to charge.
    • Custom 2: Gravitational Charge. Pulls opponents in front of Sonic towards him, and pushes opponents behind Sonic away from him.

His Final Smash turns him into Super Sonic for around 15 seconds. While in this form, he can fly in all directions at very high speeds. If he collides against a character, they receive damage and knockback. The downside to this is that to cause maximum damage, the player should make Sonic fly very fast, which is very hard to control.

Other moves worth mentioning are as follows:

  • Dash attack: Sonic curls into a ball while running, known in his games as the Spin Attack, then follows with a drop kick.
  • Forward tilt: Horse Kick from Sonic the Fighters.
  • Down tilt: Leg Throw from Sonic the Fighters.
  • Forward Smash: Wind-up Punch from Sonic the Fighters.
  • Down Smash: Has been changed into a split kick.
  • Dash: His legs perform the figure-eight movements seen when using Super Peel-Out.
  • Ledge attack: Sonic gets up on the stage with a flip-spin attack, resembling his ledge climbing move in Sonic Spinball.
  • Side taunt: Sonic runs in place while saying "Sonic speed!". Much like his dash animation, his legs perform the Super Peel-Out figure-eight movement.
  • Wall Jump: Wall Jump from Sonic the Fighters.
  • Idle poses: Sonic will either cross one foot while waving his finger, resembling the European boxart for Sonic the Hedgehog, or he'll tap his foot on the ground, as he does while idling in most classic Sonic games.
  • Jump, Crouch, Edge teeter: The animations resemble the corresponding ones from Sonic the Hedgehog.

Competitively, Sonic is considered to have improved since his appearance in Brawl. While he has had a slight nerf to his recovery, he generally has less trouble KOing with most of his attacks, and a lot of them have become more useful. He has consistently placed high on tier lists as a result.

Trophies

Trophies (or Figures in Japan) are collectible items that represent various characters, items, and other elements from the many games released by Nintendo and, in the case of Brawl onwards, from third-party franchises such as Sonic the Hedgehog as well. These collectibles are optional and appear as figurines on a golden stand, providing some information about the collectible displayed. The trophies available are different in both the 3DS and Wii U versions, with the 3DS version having more Sonic trophies than the Wii U version. Unlike other games, the trophies in the 3DS version do not list character appearances.

Name Image Description
Sonic the Hedgehog SonicTheHedgehogTrophy3DS.png

NA: The main star of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. He's an easygoing hedgehog who blows past the competition with his speed. Seriously, on the ground he's faster than anyone else in Smash Bros. Use this to your advantage, avoiding blows while landing lightning-fast attacks.
PAL: A certain hedgehog from a certain series you just might have heard of. Unlike most hedgehogs, he's incredibly fast. Like most hedgehogs, however, he can't swim. He's by far the fastest runner of all the fighters, so take advantage of that by making sure no one gets the chance to hit him. (Just try not to end up in the water.)

Unlock: Complete Classic Mode on any difficulty as Sonic.

Sonic (Alt.) SonicTheHedgehogAltTrophy3DS.png

NA: Sonic's up special Spring Jump lets him reach great heights by jumping on a spring, becoming invincible for a moment. He can't use any other specials during the jump, but he can attack or dodge. This move's great for returning from a long launch. Other fighters can use the spring, though!
PAL: Sonic's Spring Jump up special lets you bounce to great heights and briefly makes you invincible at the start. You can't use other specials while in the air, but you can use normal attacks, dodge and so on. It's great for getting both back to the stage and out of tough spots, but just remember that everyone else can use the spring too!

Unlock: Complete All-Star Mode on any difficulty as Sonic.

Shadow the Hedgehog ShadowTheHedgehogTrophy3DS.png

NA: Engineered to be the ultimate life-form by the brilliant Professor Gerald Robotnik, this black hedgehog appears very much like Sonic. He has a dark side, however. In Smash Bros., he uses Chaos Control to warp space-time, slowing every fighter down except the player who summoned him.
PAL: A black hedgehog created by Professor Gerald Robotnik to be the Ultimate Lifeform. Though he looks a lot like Sonic, he's ruthless and will do anything to achieve his goals. In this game, he uses Chaos Control to warp time and space, slowing down everything around whoever summoned him.

Unlock: Clear Solo 100-Man Smash with all characters.

Eggrobo EggRoboTrophy3DS.png These robots are one of Dr. Eggman's creations from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, where they tend to hover in the air and shoot at Sonic with their laser guns. In this game, they'll deliberately keep their distance while firing both short and long beams at the fighters. Get below them to avoid their fire, and then strike!
Tails "Miles" Prower MilesTailsProwerTrophy3DS.png This gentle-hearted little fox used to get bullied because of his two tails. Then one day he saw Sonic on West Side Island and decided to join him on his adventures. Now he's an expert mechanic and a partner Sonic can really rely on—he's come a long way since his timid, quiet beginnings!
Knuckles the Echidna KnucklesTheEchidnaTrophy3DS.png Knuckles the Echidna is the dedicated guardian of the Master Emerald, rarely leaving his post on the floating Angel Island. His serious, one-track-minded approach puts him at odds with his rival, Sonic, but the two somehow manage to be friends all the same.
Silver the Hedgehog SilverTheHedgehogTrophy3DS.png

NA: Silver the Hedgehog comes from the future— from a world that seems to have been laid to waste. He manipulated space-time to travel to the present where he meets Sonic and friends, and now he's putting his telekinetic talents to use in an effort to save the future world he calls home.
PAL: Silver the Hedgehog comes from the future - from a world that seems to have been laid to waste. He manipulated space-time to come back to the present where he meets Sonic and friends, and now he's putting his telekinetic talents to use in an effort to save the future world he calls home.

Dr. Eggman DrEggmanTrophy3DS.png

NA: Dr. Eggman knows a great deal about robots, which is neat. He also knows how to turn animals INTO robots, which isn't so neat. You'd think a man with an IQ of 300 would stop going up against Sonic, but he keeps on trying, all to build a world around his Eggman Empire.
PAL: Here is a man who immortalises animals in mechanical form because he just loves them so much! Wait. That's not quite right... Instead of using his talents for peacceful ventures, Dr. Eggman, a scientist with an IQ of 300, nurtures plans for Eggmanland to reach all four corners of the world. First poaching animals, now this? Terrible.

Amy Rose AmyRoseTrophy3DS.png

NA: Amy has two favorite things in this world: Sonic...and soft-serve ice cream. She might not seem tough—what with her love of ice cream and addiction to fortune-telling— but don't be taken in! The business end of her Piko Piko Hammer will give anyone who underestimates her a massive headache.
PAL: Amy has two favourite things in this world: Sonic...and soft ice cream. She might not seem tough, what with her love of ice cream - not to mention her addiction to fortune-telling - but don't be taken in! The business end of her Piko Piko Hammer will make sure that underestimating her is a massive headache!

Metal Sonic MetalSonicTrophy3DS.png

NA: This robotic doppelgänger was created by Dr. Eggman as a means to stop Sonic from interfering with his plans, but Metal Sonic's advanced AI chip gave him a mind of his own. At one point he even stole Dr. Eggman's identity and took over his fleet! Naturally, it fell to Sonic to put things right again.
PAL: This robotic doppelgänger was created by Dr. Eggman as a means to stop Sonic from interfering with his plans, but Metal Sonic's advanced AI chip gave him a mind of his own. At one point he even stole Dr. Eggman's identity and took over his fleet! Naturally, it was up to Sonic to put a stop to this.

Vector the Crocodile VectorTheCrocodileTrophy3DS.png

NA: The croc detective, Vector the Crocodile! He leads the Chaotix Detective Agency. Despite his scaly exterior, he has a kind heart, so he is open to doing jobs for free if it means helping out someone who is truly in need. His life would probably make for a really good noir film!
PAL: Presenting Vector the Crocodile, ace detective! Loud-mouthed and bossy on the outside, but a real softy on the inside. Despite having a business to run, he'll lend his keen eye and brilliant mind free of charge to anyone in need. ...Someone should really make a film about his life!

Charmy Bee CharmyBeeTrophy3DS.png

NA: Charmy brings a positive attitude to the Chaotix Detective Agency. To him, work is a blast! He's still a kid, though, and he has a lot to learn. His energetic nature can also annoy Vector. He's been keeping himself busy as a bee ever since he first showed up in Knuckles' Chaotix.
PAL: All work and no play makes Charmy...um... Actually, he doesn't really see a difference between those two things. His hyperactivity can get on Vector's nerves sometimes, but Charmy just can't sit still! He's been keeping himself busy as a bee ever since he first showed up in Knuckles' Chaotix.

Espio the Chameleon EspioTheChameleonTrophy3DS.png

NA: Espio is a vital member of the Chaotix Detective Agency. He is stoic and disciplined, acting as the voice of reason to Vector and Charmy. Being a chameleon, he can easily conceal himself from enemies...as long as he doesn't sneeze. That may ruin the illusion.
PAL: Vector might be the boss at Chaotix Detective Agency, but Espio's definitely the voice of reason. As a chameleon, the ninja of the animal kingdom, he can turn invisible to slip past enemies unnoticed. He just has to be careful not to sneeze when he's invisible. A blunder like that'll blow his cover instantly!

Big the Cat BigTheCatTrophy3DS.png

NA: Big the Cat spends most of his days in peace with his best friend, Froggy. But he's no ordinary cat! He enjoys napping, eating, more napping...um... He also likes fishing, which tests his strength. And if Froggy is ever in danger, Big won't even think twice before helping!
PAL: Big the Cat likes living the quiet life with his best friend Froggy. He might be the biggest fan of catnaps ever, but there's more to him than that! He loves to do a bit of fishing, which takes a lot more strength than you'd think, and woe betide you if you ever mess with Froggy...

Chao ChaoTrophy3DS.png

NA: How can you resist the cute charm of these little guys? Don't you just want to hold them tight and protect them from the dangers of the world? Well, they'd like that too. Since ancient times, if they can't find a safe place to live, they find someone to look after them.
PAL: Aren't these little guys the cutest? You just want to hold them tight and make sure nothing happens to them. Well, that's how they've survived since...forever - if they can't find somewhere predator-free, they'll find somebody to look after them. Just like Cheese did with his owner, Cream!

Rouge the Bat RougeTheBatTrophy3DS.png

NA: A treasure hunter with an eye for gems. Though bats are usually very mysterious, Rouge has no problem expressing her strong drive to get what she wants. She's foxy and clever, and even the infamous Dr. Eggman has been fooled by her on occasion.
PAL: A treasure hunter with an eye for precious gems. She wants to get every jewel and treasure in the world, and she'll never give up once she's got a target in her sights. She's smart and tactical, and can even manipulate Dr. Eggman. Definitely someone you want batting on your side!

Cream the Rabbit CreamTheRabbitTrophy3DS.png

NA: Sidekick to Amy Rose, Cream the Rabbit is a cute, hardworking friend. She has a Chao named Cheese, and they make a great team. She probably wants to cream the next person who makes a joke about their names, but I can't help but want a cream- cheese bagel when I talk about them...
PAL: You don't often see Cream without Cheese. (Excuse us, we're suddenly really hungry.) Actually, Cream is a lovely, hardworking little rabbit, and Cheese is her beloved pet Chao. They're the perfect, adorable little team, and not in the slightest bit edible.

E-123 Omega E123OmegaTrophy3DS.png

NA: E-123 Omega is, as his name implies, the 23rd robot in Dr. Eggman's E-100 series. Designed to be Eggman's secret weapon and contain Shadow the Hedgehog, Omega instead turns rebel and teams up with Shadow to undermine the villain and create chaos.
PAL: E-123 Omega (or E-123 Ω, if you want to be fancy) is the latest and final incarnation of Dr. Eggman's E-100 series of robots. Omega was created to keep Shadow the Hedgehog imprisoned, but rebelled against his creator for not putting him to good use, and now seeks revenge alongside Shadow.

Blaze the Cat BlazeTheCatTrophy3DS.png

NA: A princess charged with guarding the Sol Emeralds, Blaze comes from another dimension. She used to be a bit of a withdrawn loner— it wasn't until she met Sonic and co. that she really opened up. She can brandish fire at will, and she can use the Sol Emeralds to change into Burning Blaze.
PAL: A princess from another dimension charged with guarding the Sol Emeralds. She used to be a bit of a withdrawn loner, and it wasn't until she met Sonic and Co. that she really opened up. She can wield the power of fire at will, and can even transform into Burning Blaze by using all seven of the Sol Emeralds.

Jet the Hawk JetTheHawkTrophy3DS.png

NA: Jet the Hawk, a.k.a. the Legendary Wind Master, has a lot of cool stuff going for him besides his name. He's amazing on his Extreme Gear, a flying skateboard. Unfortunately, he's no hero—he leads thieves called the Babylon Rogues, and he can't stand losing to Sonic in anything.
PAL: Being known as the Legendary Wing Master is pretty cool on its own, but to earn that title by being the greatest at riding flying skateboards called Extreme Gear? That's awesome! He's the cocky leader of the Babylon Rogues, a group of thieves, and he can't stand losing to Sonic.

Music

This game has a large selection of music tracks which can be played in stages. Unlike Brawl and the Wii U version, the way songs are played is more like in Super Smash Bros. Melee where stages have a main song and an alternate song. The alternate song has a 15% chance of playing instead of the main song, but the player can force the alternate song to play by holding down R when selecting a stage. The Sonic series only has two songs, which both play on the Green Hill Zone stage.
