Buttons are pretty bog-standard items placed liberally around levels which alter something in the level when pushed.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog (16-bit)

  • Marble Zone
    • Raises a spiky metal stomper.
    • Moves a large green pillar.
  • Labyrinth Zone
    • Opens doors.
    • Makes a hidden platform appear. (act 1)
    • Changes the layout of the level. (act 3)
  • Scrap Brain Zone
    • Changes the direction of a revolving wheel that grabs Sonic.
    • Causes the floor to collapse. (act 2, when Dr. Eggman presses it)
    • Makes a large platform move down a slope. (act 3)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (16-bit)

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles

  • Angel Island Zone
    • Opens a passageway.
    • Destroys a bridge. (Act 2, when Knuckles presses it)
  • Hydrocity Zone
    • Opens a floodgate
    • Turns on some propellers underwater
    • Destroys another bridge (Act 2, when Knuckles presses it)
  • Carnival Night Zone
    • Raises water and turns out the lights. (Act 2, when Knuckles presses it)
    • Turns the lights back on. (Act 2)
    • Reverses the direction of a gravity tube. (Act 2, when Knuckles presses it)
  • IceCap Zone
    • Causes floors to collapse, after ice covering is destroyed
  • Mushroom Hill Zone
    • Closes a door. (Act 1, when Knuckles presses it)
    • Opens that same door. (Act 1)

Sonic the Hedgehog Triple Trouble

  • Special Stage
    • Causes a column of fire to appear (Stage 1, when Nack presses it)

Sonic Adventure

Sonic Unleashed

In this game, buttons are referred to as "Switches"Media:SonicUnleashed PS2 US manual.pdf[1], and their main purpose is to unlock segments of some levels. Sometimes the player may need to place a box on top to hold certain switches pressed.

  • Causes some platforms to start moving
  • Opens certain doors/keeps them opened
  • Disconnects some fire generators (PS2/Wii Gaia Gates)

Sonic Colours

  • Causes select objects to move.
