The Caterkiller, called Nal (ナール) in the Japanese Manual, is a caterpillar-esque badnik found in Marble Zone and Scrap Brain Zone that crawl along the ground. Spikes cover its body, leaving only one weak point—the head. Trying to destroy it from any other angle will make the badnik fall apart and send the pieces flying.
Also appears in the 2012 remake of Sonic Jump in Mountain Zone on the lower platforms.
Appears again in Sonic Lost World in the two versions. They move slowly and can only be hit in the head with Homing Attack, he has the appearance of cartoons as is the style of Lost World. In Windy Hill, they appear giant form and pursue Sonic to the end of the stage. In the same way it appears in Sonic Runners are common enemies in speed character stage .
Caterkiller was the first in a whole series of segmented, crawling Eggman robots which appeared in the early 2D Sonic games. Later models include:
