Stories
Betrayal
On ground zero of the destroyed Eggman Empire Bunker, Tangle asks Whisper what Mimic did to her. Whisper explains who the Diamond Cutters were. She was the scout, Slinger the Ocelot was the marksman, Claire Voyance was the psy-op, Smithy the Lion was the crafter, and Mimic was the infiltrator. They were an "anti-Eggman" mercenary team, always taking dangerous missions during the Eggman War. Whisper hands Tangle her mask to show her the video recording of one of their missions. In the playback, Mimic disguised himself as an Egg Pawn to get the others close enough to one of Dr. Eggman's bases. Claire Voyance sees with her psychic powers a formation on the far end of the base, which let's Smithy know they better tear everything down inside. Whisper is on a hill outside and spots a giant Blaster tank rolling in, realizing Eggman was expecting them. She takes it out with her Orange Rocket Wispon. Once the central command tower is neutralized, they head out of there.
Tangle loved seeing the Diamond Cutters in action, which made the Cyan Laser Wisp reminisce about the good old days. Tangle was shocked to hear a Wisp talking, then when she took off the mask, she wouldn't understand the Wisp's language anymore. Whisper explained that Smithy designed the mask to let the team communicate and coordinate effectively. Her Variable Wispon was his prototype, with the intent of everyone getting one eventually. Whisper still doesn't want to share with Tangle what happened with Mimic, but Tangle tells her that the more she shares, the more she can help her. After looking at the puppy dog eyes of all the Wisps, Whisper finally puts on the video of the night when the Diamond Cutters were taken out.
One month before Eggman took over ninety-nine percent of the planet, Mimic shared with the team a plan to take him down. Sonic the Hedgehog is still missing in action, so Eggman's Badniks have been steamrolling the planet. Claire Voyance warns Whisper to stay back, she has a bad feeling about the mission, but doesn't want to miss the chance to cause a blackout for Eggman's forces. The team enters a facility where many Shadow Androids are being kept in cold storage. Eggman is projecting alpha-waves, which interrupt Claire Voyance's powers. Smithy is puzzled by the Shadow Androids, he knows about Metal Sonic, but he hasn't seen robots like this before. Suddenly, the doors seal shut and the androids come online. Their Wispons are useless against the androids and everyone in the room is wiped out.
Dr. Eggman congratulates Mimic on a job well done. In exchange for ending the Diamond Cutters, Mimic is given a full pardon for his crimes against the Eggman Empire. Mimic decides to move on without his Wisp, while Eggman warns him that "they're more trouble than they're worth". Eggman then checks the report from the Shadow Androids and sees that one target was missing. He warns Mimic to finish the job or he'll finish him. Mimic doesn't find Whisper, but he finds her Wispon. He figures that without her weapon she won't be any threat to Eggman. Afterwards, Whisper took Smithy's prototype and continued the battle, becoming known as "the guardian angel of the battlefield", and saved Silver the Hedgehog one day. After hearing everything, Tangle asks Whisper why she would want to leave her behind. The wolf explains that she is her first friend since that day and she can't stand the thought of losing her. Tangle tells her bluntly that "too bad" she's her friend too. The two of them hug, and Tangle says her plan for Mimic.
Later, while Mimic was traveling on his Extreme Gear bike, he calls Eggman to "confirm" that they're dead. Eggman doesn't believe his bologna after what happened last time. Mimic finds the vault Tangle and Whisper were in with a trail of footprints, angering Eggman further. He finds a message written in the sand which says "we end this where we started" and asks Eggman for backup.
