Summer Vacation Chao Observation Diary is the 22nd episode in the first season of Sonic X. In the English dub, it is known as Little Chaos Lost.
Chris, Tails, Amy, Cream, Cheese, Danny, Frances, and Tanaka are spending their summer vacation on a camping trip to Tanaka's homeland, accompanied by Mr. Stewart. Sonic, meanwhile, takes a faster-paced tour around the countryside, dodging admirers, sampling the local cuisines, and buying a bag full of souvenirs.
While Chris and his companions are absorbed with watching the wildlife, Cheese floats away on a treacherous river. They resolve to go find him, leaving Amy and Tanaka to watch the camp. Meanwhile, Eggman is trying to enjoy a vacation nearby, and failing miserably due to the muggy weather and mosquitoes. Eggman sees Chris and his friends searching for something, and mistakenly thinks that they are trying to find a Chaos Emerald.
Chris and his friends follow the river through a crevice in the rock, and discover a secret Chao Garden on the other side of it. Cheese is there, along with many wild Chao. Tails notes that Chao can only live in places with clean water.
Meanwhile, Eggman has had enough of roughing it, and summons his robot Dai-da-oh/E-66 from the ocean. Eggman attacks the children as they return from the Chao Garden, thinking that they have a Chaos Emerald, but the robot slips on the riverbank and crashes. The resulting landslide muddies the water upstream of the chao garden, and Chris and his friends head back to the garden to clean the mud out of the water--a task that proves long and tedious.
As Sonic returns from his sightseeing, he encounters Eggman and destroys the robot, then makes his way to the Chao Garden and creates a whirlpool that clears the water. The wild Chao return happily to the lake, and as the cast relaxes around their campfire, Chris that Tanaka already knew about the Garden from his childhood in the mountains.
