Overview

Sonic on the Starfall Islands with the Koco, drawn by Yui Karasuno.

The Starfall Islands are a mysterious archipelago with various different environments, including grassy plains, deciduous forests, rocky cliffs, arid deserts, lush oases, volcanic ashlands and snowy peaks. Despite being separated into five different Open Zones in Sonic Frontiers, the archipelago is considered to consist of only four main islands, as Kronos Island and Rhea Island are merely separate regions of the same island. Additionally, Dr. Eggman refers to there being only four Starfall Islands in Another Story.

The archipelago's oldest known inhabitants were the Ancients, who settled there after their home planet was destroyed by The End. The Ancients built many structures across the islands, namely Portals that could be used to access Cyber Space. The End, who secretly had been following the Ancients to their new home planet, eventually wiped out most of them before being sealed inside Cyber Space by Crane. Koco eventually became the islands' dominant race, reliving the Ancients' memories through a connection to Cyber Space.

Game appearances

Sonic Frontiers

In Sonic Frontiers, Dr. Eggman and his AI assistant Sage arrived to the Starfall Islands with the intent of stealing and weaponizing the Ancients' technology. Once Sage detected The End while accessing Cyber Space, however, she sealed Eggman inside of it with the intent of protecting him.

Later, Sonic the Hedgehog, Miles "Tails" Prower and Amy Rose were heading for the archipelago to investigate the Chaos Emeralds' sudden appearance there, but all except Sonic ended up getting trapped in Cyber Cages. With guidance from The End, Sonic set out to free his friends, releasing Eggman and The End in the process. With the help of his friends, Sage and a reluctant Eggman, Sonic managed to defeat The End for good. Sonic and friends then proceeded to leave the islands, while Eggman stayed behind in order to contact Sage.

Shadow Generations

In Shadow Generations, Chaos Island was one of the locations from across time and space that Shadow the Hedgehog was able to access while trapped in White Space. Given the presence of a wrecked Assault-class Death Egg Robot in Act 1, it can be assumed that this visit to the island occurred either during or after the events of Sonic Frontiers.

In other media

TailsTube

In TailsTube #3 (feat. Knuckles), Miles "Tails" Prower tells Sonic the Hedgehog about how he's tracked the Chaos Emeralds' current location to new islands unfamiliar to him, and proceeds to project a picture of the Starfall Islands on screen. The two then decide to go investigate this with Amy Rose, setting up the events of Sonic Frontiers.

Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Convergence

In Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Convergence, Dr. Eggman is managing the deployment of his technology across the Starfall Islands from a habitat structure on Kronos Island, and decides to use his new artificial intelligence to dismantle the Ancients' cyber security systems by using a device containing it on a Cyber Space Portal.

Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Divergence

In Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Divergence, Knuckles the Echidna ends up on Ares Island after activating a Cyber Space Portal he had found in Sky Sanctuary, and proceeds to get imprisoned within a Cyber Cage by Sage.
