Chris' Long Journey is the 51st episode in the first season of Sonic X. In the English dub, it is known as Friends 'Til the End.
The episode opens with a look into Chris' memories: his mother and father would leave for long periods at a time, and even being well-behaved would not bring them back any faster. More recently, his school essay about his dream for the future was about wanting to be with Sonic forever. Faced with these memories, Chris stops the dimensional transporter before Sonic can step through it, and runs away with him. Taking a bicycle from the street, he rides off on it, with Sonic lounging on the cargo rack. Though Chris' family is worried about Sonic's inability to return home, Sonic is very relaxed about it, and lets Chris decide where to go.
Chris' parents launch a search-and-rescue operation, so Chris and Sonic evade them by hitching a ride in a truck. As Chuck chews out Nelson and Lindsey for not spending enough time with their son, Chris leads Sonic to a villa by a beautiful lake where he and his parents once visited.
At a campfire that evening, Chris and Sonic sort through Chris' conflicting feelings, and Sonic admits that he doesn't care which world he lives in; freedom to run is all he needs.
Nelson and Lindsey figure out that Chris is at the villa because it was the only place where they ever spent the summer together. Sure enough, they arrive to find Chris standing on the dock over the lake, looking at the moon...with Sonic nowhere to be seen.
