Levels with the mountain/canyon theme take place in rocky and rugid areas, often with plenty of mountains. This theme first appeared in Hill Top Zone in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Some of these levels look similar to desert/western-themed levels and may also feature elements from that theme, but some canyon levels have little sand or ruins. Some of these levels can take place at high altitudes with bottomless pits being the most common hazard.
