The Snail[1] is a cut Badnik that appeared in Emerald Hill Zone in prototype versions of Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Overview
Its design is an overgrown snail with spikes at the top of its red shell, which conceals a single wheel for locomotion similar to a Moto Bug. The Badnik normally trundles along the ground when idle, but when it sees Sonic, it charges at him by speeding up, expelling flames from its exhaust pipe. It can be destroyed by simply jumping on it or rolling/Spin Dashing into it. It was replaced in the August 21st "alpha" by the Coconuts monkey Badnik, though it still remained in the game's coding and was removed in later builds. It can be placed in Emerald Hill Zone using edit mode in the 2013 version of Sonic 2, where it functions the same way as it did in the prototypes.
Its behaviour may have been transferred to the Rhinobot Badnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3's Angel Island Zone, and the concept of a snail Badnik was used for a functionally different Badnik, the Snail Blaster, in Launch Base Zone.
A Snail with a different behaviour pattern can be seen in concept art. This version of the Snail would cling to walls, and then fall to the ground and roll after the players character as they pass it. It was to appear in Hill Top Zone.
