The Sonic the Hedgehog Hacking Contest is an annual event in the Sonic the Hedgehog community where ROM hacks or modifications of various Sonic the Hedgehog games are submitted to be evaluated by a selection of judges and awarded trophies based on a number of aspects.
Entries from the 2012 to 2022 Contests and Expos can be downloaded from the SHC Vault, with the exception of a few missing entries and those that were designated as Private or Partial Private during the period where non-public entries were allowed in the contest, until they were abolished from 2017 onwards.

History
The Sonic the Hedgehog Hacking Contest was first started in 2002 by Nayr T'nargh / Ayla as a fun idea to promote creativity and create a more competitive atmosphere to further the hacking movement. The first hacking contest went well, but the second one ended badly and the third one even worse with Nayr disappearing right after all the entries were due. The fourth one Nayr disappeared altogether leaving Verse and JcFerggy to finish out the contest for her. The fifth one promised a cash prize for winning, but Nayr was laid off from her job and has everyone involved on an IOU. The sixth contest's results were published on the 13th of November 2008, the seventh contest's on the 1st of September 2009 and the eighth contest's posted on the 8th of December 2010.
Since 2011, the Sonic Hacking Contest has provided further community involvement by having an interactive contest week before the results are announced, with the main part being that people have the opportunity to vote for a small selection of Community Trophies with the hacks that were available to download to the public. The first two years of the Contest Week were run alongside the Sonic Amateur Games Expo, with later contest weeks occurring outside of SAGE. Since 2013, contest submissions (as opposed to emailing them in) and Contest Week participation is done on a website created by Cinossu which allows full members and above of Sonic Retro and SSRG to vote for the Community Trophies - the same website being used for subsequent contests up to 2017 which allows anyone to access previous entries rather than them becoming inaccessible after that year's contest ends. The contest now also features a media panel, where streamers such as Donnie (SSF1991), MegaGWolf, SomecallmeJohnny and Redhotsonic showcase entries live on stream.
The 2017 Hacking Contest radically revamped its entry criteria to address frequent low quality submissions from previous years by introducing a Quality Control Criteria which hacks must meet in order to be submitted, whilst also introducing a separate Hack Expo as part of the Contest Week that allows exposure of hacks to the public whilst not having them judged by anyone whatsoever.
At the tail end of 2023, there has been a change in management, putting HazelSpooder in charge of the Sonic Hacking Contest, with giovanni.gen as co-host for the event.
With the announcement of the 2024 edition of the event, many changes were made, such as introducing a system allowing Judges to opt into and out of judgment for select games, the figure of the Head Judge, who would deal with more sensitive internal matters, such as tie breaking, and merging Contest and Expo entries into one, allowing entrants for the Contest to submit entries as judged or unjudged, without them being separated from each other.
Side events
As of 2022, the Sonic Hacking Contest has been hosting side events in its official Discord server. One of these is the Mega Drive Music Contest, previously known as the SMPS Competition, an event that was initially hosted on SSRG. Much like the previous event, it is run by NiphFM, and it maintains a similar structure to that of the previous competition, with the difference being that, instead of covering one specific song, participants can now cover a selection of songs that fit a certain criteria dictated by the round, criteria which is chosen by the winner of the previous round, who is determined via community vote.
The server also used to host a Sonic Level Design Contest, which followed a similar structure to that of the Mega Drive Music Contest. It has been put on hiatus with the conclusion of the third round, due to limited reception and management issues.
Prizes
With the exception of the Media Panel trophy, all trophies can be awarded on every category by a selection of Judges, as well as the general community, provided they have registered an account in the Sonic Hacking Contest website.

Categories
As of 2019, the Contest has been split into three different categories based on different game formats and technology, all of them having their own trophies. They are the following:
- ROM Hack (formerly "Retro") – Entries which are modifications of ROMs for many classic consoles, most commonly games released for the Mega Drive, Master System and Game Gear, but can also include less common systems such as the Mega-CD, 32X and Game Boy Advance, or older Windows PC games such as Sonic & Knuckles Collection. These are typically submitted as hacked ROM files.
- Modern 2D (formerly "2D PC") – Entries which are modifications of modern 2D games and remasters, including official games such as Sonic Mania and Sonic Superstars, unofficial remasters such as Sonic 3 A.I.R., or RSDK decompilations of games such as Sonic the Hedgehog. These are typically submitted as file packs that need to be loaded with a mod manager.
- 3D – Entries which are modifications of 3D games released for Windows PCs or consoles such as the GameCube and Xbox 360, such as Sonic Adventure DX, Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, Sonic Generations, Sonic Frontiers and more. These are typically submitted as file packs that need to be loaded with a mod manager.
