Mecha Sonic[1] (メカソニック)[2], also known as Mecha Sonic Mk. II[3][4], is a boss in Sonic & Knuckles, fought throughout Sky Sanctuary Zone. This sleek, blue robot is both a boss AND a mini-boss, because in Sonic and Tails' playthrough, the robot is not content to wait at the end of the Zone for the heroes to come to him. Mecha Sonic harries the animals throughout the Zone, flying his master's Egg Mobile into battle twice before the real boss fight even occurs. First, Mecha attacks with the ball-and-chain weapon from Green Hill Zone, and later he returns with the white orbs from Metropolis Zone.

Strategy

The GHZ Boss sequence plays much like it did the original game albeit with the ball swinging less realistically (and also with different music, tiles, background and sprites), but the MZ boss sequence is different in that the Egg Mobile doesn't fly high enough while there are balloons around such as to avoid getting hit by the player's jumps, so it can be defeated much quicker than the original incarnation.

Only when Sonic/Tails climbs to the top of the level does Mecha Sonic deign to fight hand-to-hand, destroying the Warp Point that Sonic/Tails just used. The battle is similar to the one fought in Sonic 2's Death Egg Zone, although Mecha Sonic has a different attack pattern: His general movement consists of curling up into a ball and dashing to the other side of the screen, uncurling and standing still for brief period, then curl up again. With each time he curls up, he moves in three different ways sequentially:

  1. By simply dashing forward to the opposite side.
  2. By bouncing on the ground and stopping in mid-air on the other side.
  3. By landing on the ground and dashing forward, then jumping into the air.

After the third method, Mecha Sonic's attack pattern cycles back to the beginning. Sometimes, when uncurling, Mecha Sonic may surprise the player by facing away from the player, then performing a back-dash to the other side. The player must be careful not to touch the spines on the back as they are harmful. When Mecha Sonic stands on the ground, he is vulnerable to attack, so the player will be able to land up to two hits, or more if they are efficient/lucky with their timing. A larger fight arena and the fact that the player is holding Rings this time tends to make this boss a lot easier than its predecessor.

Mecha Sonic is not destroyed by Sonic or Tails here, but rather left downed and sparking as the ruins begin to crumble and the heroes continue on to the Death Egg. Knuckles finishes the job in his fight against Super Mecha Sonic in his story.
