Sonic Heroes is the third 3D game to hit the Nintendo GameCube. Sonic Heroes is also the first game to go multiplatform for all systems. It was released on January 6, 2004, for the Gamecube and on January 27, 2004, for the PS2 and Xbox. The phrase "Sonic Heroes" refers to the uniting of the protagonists of the Sonic the Hedgehog series.

The game introduces several new gameplay elements. Unlike past Sonic games, which have all been single player, the player is able to control three characters at a time, switching the party's leader. Each character has a unique power which it contributes to the team. There are three types of characters that are used in gameplay. One party member is a "fly" type, able to ascend short distances with the other party members. The second type is "speed." This character can move faster than the other two and has a homing attack. The final brand of hero is "power," the character who has the most strength. Also included is a Team Attack feature that allows you to destroy all enemies on the field when your energy gauge is filled.

This game also marked the return of the Chaotix, a group last seen in Knuckles' Chaotix on the Sega 32X (except for Espio the Chameleon, who became playable in Sonic the Fighters), Shadow the Hedgehog & Rouge the Bat from Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Cream the Rabbit from Sonic Advance 2, Big the Cat from Sonic Adventure and Metal Sonic, who, prior to this game, had not played a major role in the series since Sonic CD.

Even though it is the first multiplatform Sonic game, it is least recommended for the Playstation2 because of clipping and graphics faults during gameplay. Sonic Heroes has sold 2.1 million copies worldwide.

Story

Robotnik has come back to challenge Sonic and crew again to defeat his new scheme. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles gladly accept and race off to tackle the doc's latest plan. Meanwhile, Rouge the Bat swings in on one of Robotnik's old fortresses and discovers Shadow in capsule. After an odd encounter, Rouge, Shadow, and E-123 Omega join up to find out what happened to Shadow and to get revenge on Robotnik. At a resort, Amy looks at an add that shows Sonic in it with a chao and a frog. After getting over boredom, Amy, Cream, and Big decide to find Sonic and get what they want back. Elsewhere, in a run down building, the Chaotix get a package that contains a walkie talkie. Tempting them, Vector, Charmy, and Espio decide to work for this mysterious person, so they can earn some money.

Sonic R (the R stands for racing) is a racing game made by Sega for the Sega Saturn and PC. It features characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. The game is characterized by the same sense of environmental openness in the Sonic platformers. It contains colorful 3D graphics combined with a strong soundtrack by Richard Jacques (including songs performed by British singer T.J. Davis).

Gameplay

There are several collectible rings across each of the five racetracks. Each ring regenerates after a short period of time. These rings can serve two purposes.

  • Stepping on a speed boost will consume all of a player's rings, to a maximum of 50, and boost the player ahead along a preset path. The boost is at a speed approximately three times the normal maximum speed of a character and lasts for a duration proportional to the number of rings deducted.
  • Using twenty or fifty rings will open one of many special doors. After being opened, the doors remain open for all players for the duration of the game. The number of rings required to open the door is displayed in the frame above it.

There are also inexhaustible emblem bonuses. Touching an emblem gives the racer one of multiple possible rewards, including a random number of rings and the water and lightning shields that appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The bubble shield allows the racer to walk on water once, after which it disappears. The lightning shield attracts rings to itself, but is eliminated upon touching water.

Aside from the main game, there are three special gameplay modes: reverse, in which racing occurs facing the opposite direction, break five balloons, and tag four players.

Characters

There are five racers in each race. The four "best" racers that have been activated are automatically selected as computer opponents if a secret character is chosen. If one of the default characters is chosen, then the opponents with be the other default racers.

Some racers can run on water for a limited period of time, and can "swim" in it indefinitely, at greatly reduced speed. In addition, each of the ten playable characters has a different speed and a unique set of abilities. Unlike most racing games, these abilities are designed such that certain characters, even among characters that are initially playable, have a clear edge over others. The four characters that are initially playable are Amy Rose, Tails, Knuckles, and Sonic. Below are the characters and their abilities, listed roughly from worst to best.

Released for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, Sonic & Knuckles, the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, featured unique Lock-On Technology, which was a special slot located at the top of the cartridge to plug other Genesis games into. When combined with Sonic the Hedgehog 3, it created Sonic 3 & Knuckles. When combined with Sonic the Hedgehog 2, it made Knuckles in Sonic 2, which allowed the player to play as Knuckles the Echidna, who had not been available for play in any game up to Sonic & Knuckles. When combined with Sonic the Hedgehog, the game generated unlimited "Blue Sphere" special stages, the method used to get emeralds in the game. Putting any other Genesis cartridge on top of Sonic & Knuckles produces a single "Blue Sphere" special stage based on the serial number of the cartridge inserted.
