The Heavy King is the ninth major boss fought in Sonic Mania when playing as Knuckles, and is encountered at the end of Lava Reef Zone Act 2. He is the leader of the Hard-Boiled Heavies, and commands his elite troop with a watchful eye and a powerful scepter.

On reaching the boss arena - the same Master Emerald shrine seen in Sonic & Knuckles' Hidden Palace Zone (Sonic & Knuckles) - the Heavy King attempts to steal the Master Emerald for himself using the same claw-arm machine which excavated the Phantom Ruby at the start of the game. However, Knuckles remembers Dr. Eggman's previous successful attempt, and this time manages to successfully stop the Emerald from being stolen before engaging in battle with the Heavy King himself.

Defeat Strategy

Similar to Super Mecha Sonic, the Heavy King will jump atop the Master Emerald and absorb its power, after which he will hover around the shrine and unleash one of three attacks from his scepter:

  • Firing two lasers beams across the floor, emitting shockwaves which damage the player on contact. These can be avoided by standing on high ground, such as the inactive Super Emeralds or the Master Emerald itself.
  • Shielding himself in a barrier of energy orbs, then bouncing across the shrine, shooting the orbs directly at Knuckles. Simply keep moving to avoid this attack.
  • Firing a massive barrage of bullets around the shrine. The player can use the inactive Super Emeralds as cover for this attack. Occasionally, the Heavy King may use this attack directly after using his laser beam attack.

After attacking, the Heavy King will retreat to the Master Emerald to recharge for another attack, allowing the player a chance to land some hits on him. He can also be attacked while he's hovering in the air after charging energy. Eight hits will defeat the Heavy King, after which he'll escape, riding the claw-arm machine out of the arena.
