Kitsunami the Fennec[1][2][3], also referred to as Kit, is a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by IDW Publishing. He is an anthropomorphic fennec who was stripped of all memories of his past and modified into a villanous cyborg by Dr. Starline with the purpose of supporting Surge the Tenrec and replacing Miles "Tails" Prower. When they found out about their origins, however, Kit helped Surge take revenge on everyone she blames for their past lives being taken away from them.
Character conception
Kit was inspired by a glitched version of Tails that writer Ian Flynn remembered seeing in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles[4], with his design conceptualised by artists Evan Stanley and Mauro Fonseca[5]. According to Fonseca, Kit's design took inspiration from the King of Sorrow, a character from Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil[5]. His boots were repurposed from an unused design for Dr. Starline[6].
Surge and Kit were originally pitched in 2017, before the first issue was even released, and both were originally planned to debut alongside Dr. Starline as a trio. This pitch was rejected at the time as the staff felt it was too early, though the characters would eventually be picked up again in 2021[1][2][3]. They were originally pitched as androids, but were later changed to cyborgs by Sega's request[7].
