Surge the Tenrec is a character from the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series published by IDW Publishing. She is an anthropomorphic tenrec who was stripped of her past and modified into a villanous cyborg by Dr. Starline with the purpose of eradicating and replacing Sonic the Hedgehog as the hero, with support from Kitsunami the Fennec. When they found out about their origins, however, Surge decided to take revenge on everyone she blames for their past lives being taken away from them.

Character conception

Surge was inspired by the infamous "Ashura" glitch character from Sonic the Hedgehog 2[1] (similar to Scourge the Hedgehog's redesign in the Archie comic series), with her design conceptualised by artists Evan Stanley and Mauro Fonseca[2][3]. According to Fonseca, Surge's design took inspirations from a variety of sources, including Japanese delinquents[4], Android 18 from Dragon Ball Z[2], Sango Morimoto's depiction of Amy Rose from the Shogakukan manga[4], and a prototype design for Blaze the Cat[2]. Evan Stanley has attested that Surge's design is not based on an exact kind of tenrec, but looks like a lowland streaked tenrec[5].

Surge and Kit were originally pitched in 2017, before the first issue was even released, and both were originally planned to debut alongside Dr. Starline as a trio. This pitch was rejected at the time as the staff felt it was too early, though the characters would eventually be picked up again in 2021[6][7][8]. They were originally pitched as androids, but were later changed to cyborgs by Sega's request[9].

Personality and traits

Due to Dr. Starline's brainwashing, Surge is incredibly angry and driven to destroy Sonic. She has no memory of her past and wants to burn everything down. She also likes to call Kit "Drippy". Ian Flynn says she has a ravenous sweet tooth.[10]

Surge has many of Sonic's abilities such has his incredible speed and can Spin Dash. She is also able to generate electricity, however is not immune to being hurt by electrical weapons.[10] With the Dynamo Cage she can also absorb the power of Chaos Drives and the Wisps' hyper-go-on energy.
