Sega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (SEGA AGES ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ2) is a re-release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, developed by M2 as the sixteenth entry in the Sega Ages lineup for the Nintendo Switch.
Contents
Gameplay
This re-release gives the player the option of either playing the original game with all the original modes and the ability of playing as Sonic and/or Tails, or the option to play Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and play as Knuckles.
Almost all of the features from 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 return and are available for both games, including the "Ring Keep" mode where the player starts each Act with 10 Rings and only loses half their Rings when hit, and the "Super Sonic/Super Knuckles" mode where the player starts with all seven Chaos Emeralds and 50 Rings. The settings menu can allow the player to enable the level select by default, or change the games' region setting to Japanese or International (toggles Tails' name to Miles).
In addition to the returning features, there are brand new ones of which were previously included in Sega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog. One such feature is the inclusion of the Drop Dash from Sonic Mania, useable only by Sonic, which can be toggled on or off. Another feature is the Ring Chain, which chains Rings collected by the player across each Act, but will be reset to zero if the player loses their Rings. The player's highest chain is uploaded to an online leaderboard. Enabling in-game cheat codes will disable the Ring Chain feature until the game is reset. HD Rumble can also be enabled in the settings menu, which will make the player's controller vibrate from certain actions such as using the Spin Dash, breaking things such as Badniks and monitors, and taking damage. Replays of the player's sessions are also saved automatically for all game modes, with up to 10 replay files being stored at one time.
Challenge Mode
A single challenge mode is available in this version. In this challenge, the player is tasked with playing through Emerald Hill Zone Act 1, collecting 100 Rings and reaching the Signpost as quickly as possible. If the player doesn't have enough Rings when they make it to the goal, they will fail the challenge. This challenge can be played as either Sonic or Knuckles, with the player's fastest time for each character being uploaded to an online leaderboard, as well as replays being saved.
