Parry[1] (パリィ) is a move performed by all four of the playable characters in Sonic Frontiers, available by default for Sonic the Hedgehog and unlockable for other characters. It is a defensive technique that they can use in combat.

Overview

Parrying is performed by pressing and holding L1+R1 (PS4/PS5)/Left Bumper+Right Bumper (XB1)/L+R (Switch) on the ground or in mid-air for as long as possible, making the player's character take a defensive stance, and waiting until an enemy lands an attack on them. When hit by an attack in this state, they will automatically parry the attack, which will negate all damage and knockback as well as trigger a slow-motion effect similar to "Witch Time" from the Bayonetta series. At this point, the player can freely follow up with any attack during the effect. If the Grand Slam has been unlocked for Sonic, a prompt to use the move will appear after a successful Parry. Some Open Zone challenges require Sonic to successfully Parry projectiles.

Super Sonic can also perform a Parry when fighting the Titans. In such cases, Super Sonic will teleport away after a successful Parry, and will reappear in a flash of light if the player follows up with an attack, a dodge or another Parry.

In "Another Story", Amy, Knuckles and Tails can unlock the Parry as a Skill in their respective skill trees for 10 Skill Points. Their use of the Parry is the same as with Sonic, however they use different animations for the move - Amy uses her Piko Piko Hammer, Knuckles uses his fists, and Tails uses a yellow Spring. They can also unlock additional Skills for 30 Skill Points that are upgrades to the Parry:

  • Amy can unlock the Poison Parry, which reduces the health of enemies who are parried.
  • Knuckles can unlock the Break Parry, which reduces the defense of enemies who are parried.
  • Tails can unlock the Debuff Parry, which reduces the attack power of enemies who are parried.

Quotes

Use your enemies' moves against them by utilizing parry during combat. A visual cue lets you know when an enemy is about to attack. If you react quickly enough, you can parry it and follow up with a counterattack of your own.
