Some games in the franchise also have some last story elements in them as well, such as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 where a true final boss is faced when all the emeralds (&/or their [[Super Emeralds|super variants) are collected with Sonic as the main playable character, it takes place in the Doomsday Zone which is only accessible in Super or Hyper form, but if you do it with trying to collect the Super Emeralds and do not have all of the super emeralds, that will forfeit the chance for the final zone to be accessed.

Finalhazard in Sonic Adventure 2's Last Story.

In the Sonic the Hedgehog games, a Last Story (ラストストーリー) refers to the final section of the single-player story mode, typically appearing as a "secret" selection on the game options screen and only unlocked after fulfilling specific requirements: often the completion of all the game's normal character storylines, along with the collection of all 7 Chaos Emeralds. The Last Story typically brings the plot of the game to conclusion; cutscenes play, secrets are revealed, supers get transformed, and the player finds themselves pitted against the real final boss.

Overview

Metal Overlord in Sonic Heroes Last Story.

The first Sonic game to explicitly include a Last Story was Sonic Adventure 2. Once both the Hero and Dark stories had been completed, a third option became accessible in the Story Select menu, labeled "Last". The Last Story saw mysteries revealed about Professor Gerald's final descent into madness, with both heroes and villains forced to team up for the massive final level, Cannon's Core, and the final bosses, Biolizard and Finalhazard.

Although Adventure 2 was the first game to call its final chapter "Last Story", Sonic Adventure included a very similar conclusion under the auspices of the "?" Super Sonic character selection. Here Sonic made a final tour of Mystic Ruins, tracking the progress of the renegade Chaos just before his final transformation, and revealing the last details of Pachacamac's ancient crime against the Chao. The final boss sees Perfect Chaos fight Super Sonic in the ruins of Station Square.

One could go so far as to extrapolate the trend back further, to Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles. The Doomsday Zone fulfills many of the criteria of a Last Story: a final boss inaccessible in normal play, only unlocked after the Chaos Emeralds (or better the Super Emeralds) have been collected. However, since the level is continuous with Sonic's normal playthrough after Death Egg Zone, Doomsday is not generally considered a Last Story. Likewise, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Generations and the storybook titles do not have Last Stories, since their last bosses don't require extra accomplishments to unlock beyond clearing the Sonic-only story.

List of Last Stories

Game Level/boss Unlock criteria
Sonic Adventure Perfect Chaos Complete all characters' stories in Adventure mode.
Sonic Adventure 2 Cannon's Core, Biolizard, Finalhazard Complete the Hero and Dark stories.
Sonic Heroes Metal Madness, Metal Overlord Complete all four teams' stories and collect all seven Chaos Emeralds.
Shadow the Hedgehog The Last Way, Devil Doom Reach all ten endings in Story mode.
Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) End of the World, Solaris Clear all three stories.
Sonic Riders Babylon Guardian, Shugo-hei Complete both Sonic and Babylon stories.
Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity Mobius Strip, Master Core: ABIS
Sonic Superstars Black Dragon Complete both Story Mode and Trip's Story, and collect all seven Chaos Emeralds.

Various Sonic games for handheld consoles have also included Last-Story-like final levels, typically unlocked by collecting all the Chaos Emeralds. These stages are generally just one long boss fight:

Game Level/boss Unlock criteria
Sonic Advance The Moon Zone Complete the game with all characters and collect all seven Chaos Emeralds, then clear X-Zone as Sonic.
Sonic Advance 2 True Area 53 Complete the game with all characters except Amy, and collect all seven Chaos Emeralds as Sonic.
Sonic Advance 3 Nonaggression Clear Altar Emerald as Sonic with all seven Chaos Emeralds.
Sonic Rush Exception Complete the game as both Sonic and Blaze, and collect all Chaos and Sol Emeralds.
Sonic Rush Adventure Deep Core Clear Big Swell, and collect all Chaos and Sol Emeralds.
Sonic Colours (Nintendo DS) Nega-Mother Wisp Complete the game and collect all seven Chaos Emeralds.
