Sir Charles "Uncle Chuck" Hedgehog is a fictional anthropomorphic hedgehog created by DiC for the 1993 Sonic the Hedgehog animated TV series (SatAM). Uncle Chuck is depicted as the uncle of Sonic the Hedgehog and an inventor.

Character conception

Uncle Chuck was designed to be a relative to Sonic, and shares a similar appearance to his nephew. Initially the only difference was the inclusion of a white mustache and eyebrows and slightly different shoes, however his fur was later lightened so that he could be more easily distingushed from Sonic. Uncle Chuck and Sonic's dog Muttski were originally the main driving force for Sonic fighting against Dr. Robotnik - Robotnik kidnapped the two and roboticized them, turning them into mechanical slaves.

While designed for the cartoon, Uncle Chuck first appeared in the US comic book series released by Archie Comics. He was also the only SatAM character to be brought back in Sonic Underground.

A knight of the Acorn Kingdom of Mobius, Sir Chuck was the creator of the roboticizer, a process that turns flesh into metal and robs an individual of his or her free will, Charles hoped to use this technology as a means of curing the sick and allowing people to live longer. The project was stolen by Warlord Julian Kintobor, who declared himself Robotnik and used it to enslave Mobians everywhere after taking control of the capital city Mobotropolis. Sir Charles was among the first to be roboticized. Years later, he regained his free will and was reunited with his nephew Sonic. He worked as a spy for the Freedom Fighters up until Robotnik's defeat.

Sega has since mandated that no comic characters can claim to be related to Sonic, so Uncle Chuck became an "uncle to everybody" in later issues.
