Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, known as Dairantou Smash Brothers Special (大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ SPECIAL) in Japan, is the fifth in a series of fighting games featuring Nintendo characters, as well as third-party characters including Solid Snake, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man and Bayonetta. This game also supports amiibo, including the Sonic amiibo.
Contents
On June 12th, 2018, it was announced during the E3 Nintendo Direct[19] that every single playable character from the past four games will return. Among them is Sonic the Hedgehog, marking his third appearance as a fighter in the series, and Bayonetta, who was DLC in the previous game.
In addition, the Green Hill Zone stage from Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Windy Hill Zone stage from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and the Umbra Clock Tower DLC stage make a return. Shadow the Hedgehog reprises his role as an Assist Trophy for the third time, using Chaos Control to slow down time once again, along with the addition of three new Assist Trophies: Knuckles the Echidna, who attacks opponents by punching, digging and using the Homing Attack when summoned[20]; Rodin, who attacks with giant arms similar to Bayonetta's Wicked Weaves and leaves behind items when finished; and Akira Yuki from Virtua Fighter, appearing in his polygonal form from the original game.
Like most fighters in the game, Sonic and Bayonetta must be unlocked in order to play as them. There are three methods to unlock them:
- Play VS. matches, Mob Smash, Spirit Board or World of Light. Sonic is the 17th character to be unlocked in order, and Bayonetta is the 43rd.
- Clear Classic Mode as Mario to unlock Sonic, then either clear Classic Mode as Mario again or as Sonic to unlock Bayonetta.
- Have Sonic and Bayonetta join the player's party in World of Light.
At The Game Awards 2019, just one day before the release of Ultimate, Joker from Persona 5 was announced to be a paid downloadable fighter as part of the first of five DLC "Challenger Packs", and was later released on April 17th, 2019. The pack that features Joker also includes a stage based on Mementos, and various music tracks from the Persona series. At the same time as Joker, various Mii Fighter costumes were released as separate DLC based on the protagonists of Persona 3 and Persona 4, along with hats based on Teddie and Morgana, and the return of the Tails and Knuckles costumes from the previous game.
As a fighter
Sonic
Sonic retains the many moves he has had in previous Smash games, with some moves having slight changes from the 3DS and Wii U entries. His attributes have been altered, making him faster in many areas, but making him considerably lighter. His special moves are as follows:
- Neutral Special: Homing Attack. Sonic spins in mid-air for a second, and then launches towards the back of the nearest enemy in an arc. The move can now be charged for longer, further increasing its power and accuracy, and can still be activated immediately with . A homing reticle is now also displayed on an opponent like in many games since Sonic and the Secret Rings.
- Side Special: Spin Dash. Sonic starts Spin Dashing on the ground or mid-air. The longer the button is held down, the bigger the charge, the faster Sonic will go, and the more he'll move for until he has to stop. In this game, the move can no longer be cancelled by shielding, and Sonic can now be stopped if the opponent shields, hurting its utility.
- Up Special: Spring Jump. When activated, a red spring spawns under Sonic, and he's sent flying upwards, the spring staying there for around three seconds if the move is used on the ground. This move is mostly used for recovery, as it doesn't normally cause damage, however, if it's activated in mid-air, the spring tumbles downward, which can cause some minor damage.
- Down Special: Spin Charge. Like his Side Special, except it's charged like in the classic games, by mashing the button while is held. This move also lacks the minor backwards movement and small hop at the start. In this game, the trail changes colour to indicate charge strength, going from blue to cyan to yellow.
- Final Smash: Super Sonic. Sonic transforms into Super Sonic like before, but the move now functions differently. Super Sonic now automatically zips back and forth across the screen at lightning fast speed without input, though the player still has some vertical control over him using and . He doesn't do as much damage as before and lasts a shorter amount of time.

Classic Mode
Classic Mode in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has each fighter go through their own predetermined set of opponents and stages, sometimes with special rules or conditions put in place.
Sonic Route: At the Speed of Sound
Sonic's route is named "At the Speed of Sound", and all of his opponents are a mix between the game's fastest characters and references to other Sonic games in chronological order.
Round | Opponent | Stage | Music | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Fox | Green Hill Zone | Green Hill Zone | References the classic Sonic titles on the Sega Mega Drive, with Fox serving as an allusion to Tails. |
2 | Captain Falcon | Figure-8 Circuit | Super Sonic Racing | References the various racing games Sonic has starred in, particularly Sonic R. |
3 | Giant Metal Sonic | Fourside (Ω form) | Open Your Heart | References the fight against Chaos at the beginning of Sonic's story in Sonic Adventure. |
4 | Kirby x3 | Halberd | Sonic Heroes | References Sonic Heroes. Each Kirby is coloured after the three character types (blue for the Speed Type, yellow for the Fly Type, and red for the Power Type), and the round taking place on the Halberd is a reference to Egg Fleet and Final Fortress, the last two stages of the game. |
5 | Sheik | Mushroomy Kingdom | Seven Rings in Hand | References Sonic and the Secret Rings. |
6 | Giant Incineroar | Windy Hill Zone | Wonder World | References Sonic Lost World, with Incineroar serving as an allusion to Zavok. |
Bonus Game | ||||
Final | Master Hand | Final Destination | Master Hand | On Intensity 7.0 or higher, Crazy Hand will also appear and fight alongside Master Hand, and the music will change to "Master Hand / Crazy Hand". |
Bayonetta Route: The Requiem of Fallen Wings
Bayonetta's route is named "The Requiem of Fallen Wings", and many of her opponents have wings, in reference to her battles against angels.
Round | Opponent | Stage | Music | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Dark Pit | Umbra Clock Tower | One Of A Kind | May be a reference to the stage being the setting of "The Witch Hunts", the opening scene of the first Bayonetta game. |
2 | Falco | Castle Siege | Tomorrow Is Mine (Bayonetta 2 Theme) (Instrumental) | |
3 | Ridley | Reset Bomb Forest | Riders Of The Light | May be a reference to the fight against Fortitudo in the Colisseum Ruins. |
4 | Giant Charizard | Skyloft | Time For The Climax! | |
5 | Meta Knight | Skyworld | Theme Of Bayonetta - Mysterious Destiny (Instrumental) | |
Bonus Game | ||||

Final | Giant Palutena | Palutena's Temple (Ω form) | The Legend of Aesir | References the final boss battle against Jubileus, the Creator. |
Joker Route: Shadows
Joker's route is named "Shadows", and he mainly fights opponents relating to shadows. On every round, the former enemy fighter becomes a ally to him under a new alternate costume, referencing how in Persona 5, Joker can negotiate with the Shadows and recruit them as Personas, freeing the corrupted demon in the process. Additionally, some items and Assist Trophies are references to Persona 5, such as the Kapp'n Assist Trophy referencing the Morgana Bus.
Round | Opponent | Stage | Music | Notes |

1 | Mr. Game & Watch x6 | Mementos | Last Surprise | |
2 | Giant Kirby | Kalos Pokémon League | Aria of the Soul | A white Mr. Game & Watch appears as the player's ally. |
3 | Samus & Dark Samus | Mementos | Mass Destruction | A blue Kirby appears as the player's ally. |
4 | Meta Knight | Mementos (Battlefield form) | Beneath The Mask | A white Dark Samus appears as the player's ally. |

6 | Giant Incineroar | Mementos (Ω form) | Rivers in the Desert | A white Link appears as the player's ally. |
Bonus Game | ||||
Final | Master Hand | Mementos (Ω form) | Our Beginning | On Intensity 7.0 or higher, Crazy Hand will also appear and fight alongside Master Hand. This fight serves as a homage to the god Yaldabaoth, the final boss of Persona 5. |
Adventure Mode: World of Light
World of Light is the Adventure Mode of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in which the player roams about a world map and fight puppet fighters possessed by spirits and rescue other fighters. At the start of this mode, a mysterious entity known as Galeem unleashes a powerful attack, engulfing the entire playable cast in light and turning countless other characters into spirits. Sonic is consumed trying to run away while also trying to save Pikachu, while Bayonetta is vaporized while attempting to evade the beams of light with Bat Within. Kirby is the only character to successfully escape.
Sonic and Bayonetta are not available until after the player has defeated Galeem, in which a separate entity known as Dharkon appears and takes control of the remaining fighters and spirits. Sonic is located within the Sacred Land sub-area in the Dark Realm, blocking the path to the Master Sword which is needed to progress, therefore making him an obligatory rescue. He is later seen standing alongside Mario as the heroes prepare their last stand in a cutscene later on. Bayonetta is one of the last fighters to be rescued as she is located in The Final Battle, and is called by Dharkon as part of his reinforcements after Roy is awakened and Master Hand is beaten. Bayonetta is required to achieve the true ending, as rescuing her allows the player to rescue Crazy Hand from Dharkon's control.
As a DLC fighter, Joker does not have a legitimate role in World of Light. Instead, he is unlocked for use in the mode after rescuing a certain number of fighters from Galeem's control.
Spirits
Spirits are collectible items that represent various characters, items, and other elements from the many games released by Nintendo and third-party franchises, which replace the trophies from past installments and are similar to the stickers from Super Smash Bros. Brawl. They can be obtained by many means, such as by clearing Classic Mode, by winning battles in the Spirit Board or World of Light, by meeting certain achievements or by purchasing them from the in-game shops. The main purpose of spirits is to power up fighters in certain modes and give them advantages in battle. Primary spirits raise a character's stats and can be leveled up and enhanced, while Support spirits give additional effects.
There are a total of 23 Spirits from the Sonic the Hedgehog series, with 14 Primary spirits, 8 Support spirits and one Fighter spirit.

Music
Like in previous Smash games, this game has a large selection of over 900 music tracks which can be played in stages, and the player can adjust how likely each available song will play on each stage with the "My Music" feature, or choose to have a specific song play when selecting a stage. 20 of the songs in the game come from Sonic games, and all of them play on both Green Hill Zone and Windy Hill Zone; 11 of the songs come from the Bayonetta series, and all of them play on Umbra Clock Tower. When Joker is purchased, 11 songs are added which all play on Mementos. The only remix the Sonic series gets is the Angel Island Zone remix from Brawl; there are no new remixes made for this series or for Bayonetta. Most of the songs here are available from the start, while those listed in bold must be unlocked.
