Originally, Sonic had no home planet, so everyone made up their own stories. Japan claimed that Sonic lived on Earth (which is the canon explanation), and the western storyline claimed he lived on [[Mobius]], which became Sonic's home in [[Sonic the Comic]], [[Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie)]] and the cartoons. The Mobius name was fueled because [[Dr. Eggman]] (back then known as Dr. Robotnik) was the only human in Sonic's world. However, the two Sonic Adventure games showed human life in the cities, but it was said to be Mobius in [[Sonic X]]. Sonic Adventure 2, however, confirmed that it was Earth. Shadow the Hedgehog said Sonic lived in the United Federation.

The United Federation is effectively the U.S.A. of Sonic's world. Populated by humans, the Federation is led by a President who works from a building highly reminiscant of the American White House. G.U.N. appears to functions as the Federation's military.

It is worth noting that the United Federation dosn't appear to be a 'World State'; in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Soleanna is strongly implied to be a wholly independent nation with its own monarchy. G.U.N. dosn't seem in too much of a rush to help the inhabitants of Monopole during Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity either.
