Porting of SNN articles

Don't do it. At least rewrite the articles.--MUser 22:47, 28 May 2009 (CDT)

Is there a huge problem with it? I mean, I figure both articles will split off into their own entities as time goes on, and the articles as they are right now are pretty well done. After all, content is content... --Tweaker 22:49, 28 May 2009 (CDT)
I believe every article he created today was a straight port of an existing article at Sonic News Network.--MUser 22:59, 28 May 2009 (CDT)
Well, I'll put it this way--the articles he's porting aren't exactly high-traffic articles; we're not going to get a flurry of Sonic Drift 2-related activity, and frankly us having the pages is more for completionism than any in-depth interest. I would be more concerned with this activity on more "important" pages (though I do realize everyone values different aspects of this site, obviously.) I'm really more concerned by SNN's stylistic use of tense (i.e., use of "you") than I am the content itself, and things may need to be rewritten on that basis alone. Finally, they seem to have no problem cribbing from us, so I have no problem taking minor articles--and I do stress the minor part of that. -- Scarred Sun 01:45, 29 May 2009 (CDT)
Would it help if I point out that I am SNN's Molten Scandium and as such am the original author of ALL those articles that I've ported? So they weren't so much cut/pasted from SNN as they were cut/pasted from my brain to SNN and then later to here. I appreciate that my style is a tad more informal than the paradigm on Retro, but hey, I have fun when writing these things. Secondly, "straight port" is a somewhat harsh indictment; they were quite a chore to reformat, I'll have you know. :/ Frozen Nitrogen 05:37, 29 May 2009 (CDT)
To be honest, most of the articles that I've seen on SNN are poor, though at least it's filling up this wiki. -- SOTI 08:51, 29 May 2009 (CDT)
Actually, that information does help clear things up. Feel free to carry on, then. :) --Tweaker 14:58, 29 May 2009 (CDT)
"To be honest, most of the articles that I've seen on SNN are poor, though at least it's filling up this wiki. -- SOTI 08:51, 29 May 2009 (CDT)"
Ow! My pride. :(
But you're right, in the large part. Which is why I'm here right now. Frozen Nitrogen 16:36, 29 May 2009 (CDT)
Yeah, that puts me more at ease knowing they were your articles to begin with. I still dont like straight pasting of SNN articles cause its another independant wiki that is trying to make it on its own. Noone is hurt if we copy paste wikipedia articles.--MUser 08:40, 31 May 2009 (CDT)
Right, but this is the independent writing of Frozen Nitrogen--not the property of SNN. By all means, he wrote it; it's his to publish wherever he pleases, verbatim.
In other words, he's not copy/pasting from SNN; he's copy/pasting from his head. --Tweaker 14:29, 31 May 2009 (CDT)
The same way I copy/paste from my head when conjecturing that Wendy Witchcart is a Nocturnus spy? :P Frozen Nitrogen 20:41, 31 May 2009 (CDT)

o hi there

You should join the Sonic Retro IRC channel. - Scarred Sun 14:42, 6 June 2009 (CDT)

Roboticizer

In trying to retain the history of the roboticizer article in your rename of it to Roboticization, I seem to have lost any changes you made to the article because of some double redirect crap. In the future, can you please request a move instead of trying to make one yourself? It would help avoid issues like this in the future. --Tweaker 15:17, 6 June 2009 (CDT)

Screenshots

I've noticed that the recent screenshots you've uploaded are seriously poor in from size issues (like the SMS/GG screenshots) to filters being used. You should get an emulator like Gens/GS which the filters are off by default I think. SOTI 10:24, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

Seriously, stop uploading broken screenshots. Or unneeded ones like Atomic Destroyer. You're dealing more damage than help. Nineko 10:48, 8 June 2009 (CDT)
Now, now, they're not broken. Sub-optimal, perhaps. Retarded, one might say. But even a retarded kid can provide some service to society. Sorting glass, for example.
Err... I seem to have lost my point somewhere in there. Frozen Nitrogen 10:58, 8 June 2009 (CDT)
Well, you could at least tag the images with a { { replace } } tag. Remove the spaces between the {.--MUser 10:59, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

That screenshot is 320x224, proper resolution, NO FILTERS, and I used Blue Knuckles for the sake of it. Nineko 11:05, 8 June 2009 (CDT)
It's quite difficult to determine where I'm going wrong if you change the pics I'm trying to use to work it out, lols. Frozen Nitrogen 11:10, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

LB Boss 2.PNG

- Am I getting closer here? Frozen Nitrogen 11:26, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

Now this is the story all about how

...my images got flipped-turned upside sown, and I'd like to take a minute, just sit right there, I'll tell you... err... why all the pix are filtered and look rubbish.

I made all these screencaps months ago for the Sonic News Network, which has absolutely no image quality guidelines at all. Not knowing how to use Kega Fusion properly, my method of acquiring pix was to PrtScr by pressing the Prt Scr key, then crop the picture out of the larger image of my desktop, THEN shrink THAT pic down in Paint. Worst method evar.

I have since moved on to learning how to turn filters off, and the staggering technical development of working out how to change the size of the window to one more apropos, but cropping's still a bitch.

So if anyone knows how to screencap properly from Fusion, do tell. And then I won't end up uploading teh mangled piccies, yes? Frozen Nitrogen 11:48, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

Definately learn how to take proper screenshots. I had to learn how to do it when I started uploading pics. The proper dimensions for Mega drive pics would be 320x240 or something. You had the screen double the size or so in that last pic.--MUser 11:51, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

I think I'm at the last hurled with it now. Fusion does have the built-in option to auto-take screenies... I just don't have a clue where it puts them. It's certainly not anywhere obvious... :S Frozen Nitrogen 11:55, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

HOW TO TAKE PROPER SCREENSHOTS:

  1. I would recommend actually using Gens/GS over Kega Fusion for this--set "Render" to Normal and hit Shift+Backspace while playing to get a 320x224 PNG image (Kega will stretch to 320x240). Personally, I find Shift+Backspace hard to type, so I use a macro manager (to take it down to one keystroke) and/or a timer that automatically takes pictures every x seconds. You can change what directory the images will output to by selecting Options-->Directories.
  2. Run pngpress in the same folder as your screenshots to get them as optimized as possible.

- Scarred Sun 13:59, 8 June 2009 (CDT)

Manual Scans

If you want, there is a upload page that allows for multiple images to be uploaded at once as long as they are all in a zip. If you scan more manuals it will help you save time uploading there. You can find that upload page here.

SMS/GG screenshots

I use Emukon to take screenshots. It outputs unfiltered PNGs with decent brightness. The only issue it has is an 8-pixel wide border on the left edge of Master System screenshots, which needs to be cropped. Other than that it's perfect. - Hivebrain 12:38, 9 June 2009 (CDT)

Basic English

In some articles I had to actually consult a online dictionary to look up words used in them. Try to use less complicated words. You can look at what I changed in the Tails adventures level pages to see what I mean.--MUser 20:57, 11 June 2009 (CDT)

There's nothing wrong with using an expansive vocabulary--if anything, it makes the writing richer and more diverse. My only problem is the fact that I believe the writing should be in a more encyclopedic tone--not a fictional tone as the precedent seems to be so far. --Tweaker 13:49, 12 June 2009 (CDT)
I appreciate the drive for encyclopaedicness-ness, I really do, but at the same time I appreciate that I'm writing about the storyline of games staring talking ninja chameleons and morbidly obese roboticists. So I write these things with a degree of amusement. If you really feel it necessary to bleed all the fun out of an article afterwards by bland-erising the language, then I won't try and get into an edit war about it... but I don't intend to write in greyscale Wikipedese for every single entry I upload.
TL;DR: 'words words words!! Frozen Nitrogen 13:56, 12 June 2009 (CDT)
You don't seem to understand a couple of things. Number one, Sonic Retro is not an extensive, expansive fan-fiction or even based in fiction--it is a factual account of the Sonic the Hedgehog series that encompasses every single subject that we can possibly hope to cover... as long as they're based in fact. When you write a summary that describes something from an objective, factual perspective, you don't add adjectives such as "overjoyed, courageous kitsune" if you're trying to, say, refer to Tails--you just say Tails.
I have as much as an appreciation for literature as anyone else, but the fact of the matter is that an encyclopedia--which we are in pretty much every sense of the word--is not a work of fiction, and as such dictates a different tone of description. That said, nothing says you can't be articulate in your writing; as long as you continue to provide a proper summary of what you're writing about that carries the correct tone, you can use whatever kind of words you want. --Tweaker 14:19, 12 June 2009 (CDT)
Here's a tip: Before criticizing other users for their use of the English language, make sure you actually use English correctly yourself. As an example, "should of" and "could of" are incorrect; the correct phrases are "should have" and "could have". --GerbilSoft 14:04, 12 June 2009 (CDT)

Is this MY grammar getting critiqued, or someone else's? 'Cos I'm usually quite good with the "have / ofs", and if I'm doing those wrong, it's certainly not intentional. :S Frozen Nitrogen 14:10, 12 June 2009 (CDT)

Frozen Nitrogen 14:15, 12 June 2009 (CDT)
Nevermind GerbilSofts attempt at derailing the topic. I appreciate your additions to the wiki Frozen Nitrogen, but I sort of wanted to say what Tweaker said, let's have a encyclopedic tone in the articles. For example, in ficition you might say young fox, but in a encyclopedia you can just say Tails.--MUser 14:16, 12 June 2009 (CDT)

Fair play indeed. My method is usually to use Tails the first time I mention him, but in an article about Tails Adventures, that would, IMO, get old quite quickly, with ""ails can do this, and Tails can do that, and when Tails goes here, Tails can find this item, which Tails can use to do something". ...Which is why I mix it up a little bit. Frozen Nitrogen 14:35, 12 June 2009 (CDT)

Referencing

How I handle referencing is to simply have a weblink. This is how I do the reference.[1] It leaves a nice number even.--MUser 10:13, 16 June 2009 (CDT)

Dark SMS screenshots

What emulator are you using to take them? Kega is known to take extra dark screenshots, I personally use Dega, which unfortunately saves them as 256x192, and I later crop them by hand; afterwards, pngout :) Nineko 22:05, 26 June 2009 (CDT)

Art Marine

Sorry, I don't know what's up with that pic, you should really ask Scarred Sun about it. Nineko 10:55, 6 July 2009 (UTC)

Re: Sonic Rivals 2 screenshots

If I recall correctly, there was a guy over at The Sonic Stadium who was doing custom Rivals 2 shots for people who asked, and I just asked to get a title screen shot. They've since lost their DB, so that thread doesn't exist any longer, but I bet if you made a topic or something asking for that guy who did them you'd probably have some luck.

Also, somewhat on the subject, rare-for-MobyGames unwatermarked shots here. - Scarred Sun 03:41, 19 July 2009 (UTC)

Tom Payne interview

You got the transcript for that somewhere?--MUser 14:36, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Nope. I went to bed while the interview was still ongoing, after being assured that someone was taking a transcript and they'd have it posted on the wiki for me to read later. The absence thereof makes me a sad Nitrogen.
In an RPG-style quest, I suppose you could wander around Badniknet-town and ask people if they know anything about the missing data. You might get XP and a Sword +1 for completing it! Frozen Nitrogen 15:42, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
If you're still looking for it, here it is: http://blazemp3.sepwich.com/sage09/tpayne_2009.html - you'll find all 3 interviews in that folder. SOTI 23:38, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

Launchballer

Right. What I will do is link your signature on SNN to here so that they know where you are. Am I capable of erection now?--Launchballer 15:01, 1 September 2009 (UTC)

LOL. Best typo evaaaaar. I presume you meant some sort of SNN sysops election. Gimme some time to check what's happening and then we'll see. Frozen Nitrogen 15:22, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
Launchballer, you keep on saying that. *ding* In any case, if you are a good contributor to such a wiki then maybe you should just stick round here. Sure, it's different from SNN but at least it's better. SOTI 17:31, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
When I say "erection", I mean page creation, account creation and all that malarkey. By the way, is there anything I can do with this recent technical mumbo jumbo that's been stirring? And also, I'd like to implement my talk bubble here, if that's okay with everyone.--Launchballer 20:39, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
Aw. That's considerably less amusing.
With respect to Membership, you did make the appropriate request on the validation forum, didn't you? Frozen Nitrogen 22:59, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
What form?--Launchballer 15:10, 7 September 2009 (UTC)
Molten/Frozen, I need some help. I've accidentally caused some problems with sockpuppetry and meatpuppetry. Can you help out there, please?--Launchballer 14:45, 21 September 2009 (UTC)

Sonic Rivals 2 Pics

The source is me. I just got a screen capping utility and am taking pictures of the levels. I have a Mystic Haunt pic that I can upload in the place of the one there. Aquaslash 01:19, 10 September 2009 (UTC)

Sonic Rivals 2, pt. 2

Does your UMD of Sonic Rivals 2 have a USK rating on it? Even though the scan for the UMD is marked as German, I'm 90 percent sure by that date there weren't separate German releases to deal with the USK issue. -- Scarred Sun 17:15, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Sonic Heroes pics

Hey, I've got that thing here, so if you want 1024 screens instead of the 800 resolution I can get them real quick. 0r4ng3

I'm sorry, you've got what thing where? Uhh... if you're talking about a copy of Heroes that you can play in 1024, then by all means, upload some pix. I've just been replacing some of the ones we have with others that show more of the level environment, and also pictures of the character moves and stuff. Go nuts! Frozen Nitrogen 22:48, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
Oh you shameless person you. I have a copy of Heroes where we can play at 1024. I'll upload them then. 0r4ng3
OH I SEE NOW. The original Special Stage pic was 1024px and that was the one you were offering to replace because my new one was smaller. Sorry. That went right over my head before now.
In which case "Yes, 0r4ng3, a larger-res shot of the special stage would be lovely". Just make sure you get some balls and the Emerald in the pic; 'cos that was the whole reason I changed it in the first place. ;) Frozen Nitrogen 23:35, 21 February 2010 (UTC)
I'll try to use the same places for most of them (as long as I recognize). I won't forget to put up the ones with balls and emeralds either. :P 0r4ng3
Just noticed they're all in jpg form. I also noticed you moved the one I uploaded before. What do I do, upload them like I did the first, and you move them later or create a new page?
Wasn't me dude. Hivebrain is snooPING AS usual. I'd say upload them as "new versions of", then the sysops who are more OCD about file extensions than I am can move them. (After they finish arranging their stationary by colour and size). ;) Frozen Nitrogen 02:20, 22 February 2010 (UTC)
http://info.sonicretro.org/File:Heroes_EggAlbatross.PNG With HUD or with no HUD for the bosses? 0r4ng3
I've been debating this a lot myself, but tend to come down on the side of "With HUD". If only for consistency with things like this, where we can't do 1337 quick screenprints to catch it without a HUD. Frozen Nitrogen 18:17, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
I'll put up a HUD then. I'll keep the no-HUDs for safe keeeping. Better for me as I'd have to play the two levels before in story mode. 0r4ng3
Good plan. I've got a horde of non-uploaded pix as backups too. It is never unwise to keep them somewhere in case policy changes in future ;) Frozen Nitrogen 19:00, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
So I've uplodaded a new version of this one: Egg Emperor, is it acceptable? If there's any image or info (from the guide) you need or needs to be replaced, drop me a line and I have no problem in getting it. I think that apart from some of the team ones every image was replaced by a 1024 res pic. 0r4ng3 22:02, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Vastly superior. That was the only one I disliked, given that it was ALL SKY. I can't see any others that need replacing. All that's left to do now is maybe screenshot pix for the Circular Attack and Fire Dunk-style moves! :D Frozen Nitrogen (Talk) 22:46, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Re: moved pages

Despite what you wrote on SonicAngel948's talk page, I think we shouldn't have any exception to this rule. If a staff member says "screw the rules" in the first place, how do you expect people to respect them? Nineko 15:05, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

They'll respect us because we wield the BANHAMMER?
Anyhow, I agree with you actually. I did intend to undo everything and move it myself, but then I was distracted by pies. :S Frozen Nitrogen 15:37, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
Actually, by "respect them" I meant "respect the rules", not "respect us" :v
Seeing a staff member who doesn't give much importance to the rules in the first place legitimates people to believe the rules aren't important for real, as we're the people supposed to enforce them the rules (no more implicit objects, lol). That said, I'm glad that we agree. Oh and btw, I'm against banning people per se, unless they do something wrong two times in a row (e.g. if SonicAngel948 moves some pages in this way again); otherwise, verbal warning and constructive criticism all the way. I forgive ignorance in good faith, but I hate recidive idiocy. Nineko 15:47, 26 February 2010 (UTC)

Big's Fishing (attack)

It should be Big Fishing. I just marked the game Big's Fishing with the soft redirect because Big Fishing redirected to that article. --ソニックエンジェル948 02:26, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Sonic Rush Boss Naming Scheme

It seems that the bosses have official names according to the template. In this case, it would be better to use those names as the articles, rather than not go through the route used for the Sonic 1 boss naming stuff. SOTI 15:50, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

In the case of Template:SROmni, 'placeholder names' meant 'I wasn't able to find official names so here's some sensible alternatives I made up to fill the template'. I was counting on other contributors to (hopefully) have the official names, but that's looking less and less likely. If you deem the current template contents too confusing as-is, then you may change it into something generic like Boss 1, Boss 2, etc. As for the boss articles themselves, I'd personally use the naming scheme of '<Zone> boss' and say who pilots it and when in the introductory line of the article itself. Mainman (Talk) 17:35, 11 May 2010 (UTC)
Making up your own names isn't good. I agree on the (Zone Name) Boss name layout, there's no need for the Eggman/Eggman Nega part, especially that it interferes with things. SOTI 17:58, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

So it's called a Baby KiKi?

Article in question: E-01 Baby Kiki

On the article you typed the bold text, which I assume is like the primary, official name, it's styled as E-01 Baby KiKi , with the second K capitalized.

Is this official? 'Cause if it is then E-08 Kart Kiki should be made consistent.

...And this may open up the potential for me to obsessively re-type the whole wiki as KiKi if admin permission granted. --Provisional1313 20:36, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

If I remember correctly, I think the English conversion of the kanji name is actually treated inconsistently in different official sources; KiKi somewhere, Kiki others. For the sake of consistency across the wiki, let's keep it as Kiki with just the 1 capital. I'll change E-01 accordingly. Frozen Nitrogen (Talk) 21:21, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Sorry to butt in. It's named Kiki in the official guides for SA and SA2 if that helps. I don't know where Baby comes from though. 0r4ng3
HMM. I just used what I found in the E-Series Robots list for the names - and our graet overlord ScarredSun wrote that, so I took it on good faith that the ones there were accurate. I'll see if I can get to the bottom of this later today. Frozen Nitrogen (Talk) 16:52, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Help Me Frozen Nitrogen, You're My Only Hope

Hey Frozen Nitrogen, my name is Bullet Francisco, from the Sonic News Network, I was wondering why you left, why don't you come back. Honestly, we need you. --Bullet Francisco 21:08, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Hi there BF. My departure from SNN came after realising that this here Sonic Retro is significantly better researched, policed, and upkept (upkeeped)? As a repository for Sonic information it's a somewhat better environment to contribute within.
Also, here, the only ludicrously coloured signature is my own, which makes me a super special rainbow flower.Frozen Nitrogen (Talk) 21:37, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

The Sonic Rush Boss Names

I didn't find them, this guy on the forum did:http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=26099&view=findpost&p=614431 Evidently they were in the official strategy guides released only in Japan. I just transcribed them. [User:CyberXIII]]

Ah-ha, so they do. Excellent. I'll get those pages moved later today, then. Thanks. Frozen Nitrogen (Talk) 18:29, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Omni Orientation

Figured this would be better moved here. What is your screen resolution currently? I think we may need to take a poll and see which screen resolutions are more used, and adjust all Omnis to the most used resolution. I feel thats the best solution here. What do you think? --RGamer2009 18:16, 28 May 2012 (UTC)

The problem there is that if you specify a one-size-fits-all omni width, some of the huge ones are still going to look cluttered and some of the small ones are going to look ridonkulous. Sonic Labyrinth has 4 levels while S3&K has 14 and 4 different bonus stages. You can't make a single omni that liiks sensible for both of them. Frozen Nitrogen (Talk) 08:21, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
Well we could do it for the ones that seem big, I think. I still vote we do the poll to see how big the resolutions are these days, and then see how many are too big for that size. --RGamer2009 18:28, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
So, what is the verdict on this? --RGamer2009 19:48, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
If you can do a poll and get a quorum, then sure, we can certainly consider standardising things if that's the way the voting goes. Frozen Nitrogen (Talk) 10:57, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
