All levels in the Sonic series exhibit a theme of some form. A level's art and any level gimmicks often contribute to this theme. Sometimes level themes correlate with the game's storyline; other times, they are used to simply incorporate a variety of settings into the game. A number of themes are visible across the Sonic series.
RyogaMasaki's now-defunct website "The Shadow Zone" initially categorized levels in this way. Recent games have introduced new themes, which have also been added to this list.

Level Style
All Sonic levels will always have a level style, or the distinct way the level is designed. If the level has a theme, it should have a specific style, but if the level doesn't, the location of the level should tell its style.
Suburban
This style is when the area looks tightly packed or the area looks homy. One example is City Escape, from Sonic Adventure 2.
Ancient Ruins
This style usually follows the Ancient ruins level theme. The area was built from a far-ancient civilization, filled with ancient relics and sacred monuments. One example is Dusty Desert from Sonic the Hedgehog '06.
Cyberspace/Dimensional
This style is when the area is within' a computer program or uses a form of technology. Around here you should find security enemies and such, protecting the new realm. Two examples, from Shadow the Hedgehog (game) is Digital Circuit and Mad Matrix, which follows this level style.
Rainforest
The Rainforest level style is usually a jungle themed level with constant rain. So far, Sonic Adventure 2's White Jungle stage is the only level with this style.
Forest/Vegetation
The Forest/Vegetation level style is a unique level style, where the jungle themed level has wild plants of beauiful sights and swampy waters usually cover the base of the dense jungles. A couple of levels can be named: Green Forest, Tropical Jungle, Botanical Kingdom, Death Ruins.
Plains
This style is usually a flatland, or hilly, range of grassy grounds, where hardly anything, but some stones, a few buildings, and some to many trees, collect on the peaceful landscape. One level from Sonic and the Black Knight, Titanic Plain, shows this level style.
Spooky/Supernatural
This style uses ghosts, haunted locations (like mansions, castles, and abandoned sites), skeletons, zombies, Eggman, and some other elements. All spooky/supernatural themed levels have this level style, as that if not, it wouldn't be spooky/supernatural at all. Hang Castle, Mystic Mansion, and Cryptic Castle are three that have this level theme and style, but one example with this style, but not the theme is Asteroid Coaster, from Sonic Colors.
Futuristic/Sci-Fi
The Futuristic/Sci-Fi level style is when the level looks like it has a distinct Future City look. Some levels do have this, while others may have fancy, sci-fi technology that looks newer than 60 years of work. A couple of examples of this level style are: Metal City, Night Chase, Megalo Station, Nightside Rush.
