Outer space theme

The outer space theme represents gameplay that takes place in outer space. This environment is often the last stage and sets up for a final encounter at the end of the game. This theme first appeared in The Doomsday Zone in Sonic & Knuckles.

In some levels with this theme, the player may have to dodge asteroids, fight huge monsters, or make use of their super form (like Super Sonic) in an environment without gravity. These levels often occur after a level with the space station theme. Sometimes these may be standard levels in which players would often jump across smaller spacecraft or other floating platforms in the vacuum of space, such as with Starlight Carnival in Sonic Colours or levels set outside the Space Colony ARK in Sonic Adventure 2.
