Barrier Eggman (バリアエッグマン) is the ninth boss of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, appearing at the end of Wing Fortress Zone. The boss is actually a small moving red laser eye. This eye can only be reached by using the platforms scattered around the room. The platforms pose as much a threat as the actual boss does.

Strategy

This boss is particularly hard. The boss arena is a small room with two laser blasters and a barrier that protects Dr. Eggman. On the ceiling is a slowly moving laser eye that needs to be hit 8 times to be destroyed. The catch is, it begins closed. After a while it opens and turns red. Then it flashes and after a few seconds it fires a blue laser beam down. After a few more seconds, it closes again. The only time it can be hit is after it opens but before it fires. It's out of the character's jumping range, so the three tiny platforms (about as wide as you are) with spikes on their bottoms that fly around the room. These must be jumped on to reach the ceiling where the laser eye is located. It's very difficult to position the player character on the correct platform as it flies under the laser eye when it's open. The platforms' movements are very erratic. To make matters worse, one controller error when jumping onto a platform could make the player hit its spikes instead.

It is best to climb on the platforms slow and wait for good opportunities to hit the boss as there is plenty of time. Get used to the platforms' movement, keep track of where each one is and will be and avoid the spikes (which cause more hits than the laser) and avoid risky moves like hitting the eye right before it fires.

It's also good to save the three Rings for as long as possible, in case the player needs them after getting hit.

Other appearances

A similar boss appears in the Flying Battery Zone in Sonic & Knuckles, albeit with a different attack strategy. Both appearances of this boss have been on one of Eggman's flying skyships.
