Terminal Velocity is the seventh and final Area of Sonic Colours. It unlocks after beating the six bosses of the previous Areas. Unlike all the previous Areas, Terminal Velocity only contains two Acts and a boss fight, and there are no Red Star Rings to collect, however the player can still achieve S-Ranks for 100% completion.

Story

As all the generators holding the planets of the Amazing Interstellar Amusement Park are destroyed, Sonic, Tails, and the Wisps start celebrating at Tropical Resort. However, this is short lived, as the resort itself begins to fall apart due to Rotatatron's arm stuck on one of Tropical Resort's 8 Hyper-Go-On Lasers as Dr. Eggman attempts to fire the lasers. Sonic and Tails realize it's time to escape, and head for the elevator to the planet's surface.

However, once they reach the elevator, they are confronted by Eggman in the Nega-Wisp Armor. After Sonic taunts the infuriated doctor, he pushes Tails into the elevator and sends it back to the planet in an attempt to prevent his buddy from getting hurt. Sonic then turns his attention to Eggman, and thus the final level begins.

Overview

Act 1

The entirety of the Area consists of nothing but auto-running sections as Sonic runs down the giant structure towards the elevator, with Eggman's Badniks making a last-ditch attempt to stop him on the way down. The Quick Step will be available at all times throughout the Act.

First, Sonic will be chased by two waves of Aero-Chasers, whose lasers must be avoided using the Quick Step as necessary. For the second wave of Aero-Chasers, the player must also jump over yellow steps, otherwise Sonic will stumble and potentially risk being hurt by the Aero-Chasers' lasers. After the second wave, Sonic will automatically jump to another part of the structure where Moto Bugs will begin chasing him down. Like in other stages with Moto Bug chases, Sonic must destroy as many Moto Bugs as possible using Quick Steps to score points and rescue White Wisps to Boost with.

The Moto Bug chase will end with Sonic bouncing off of Springs to a final showdown with a Big Chaser. The player must boost conservatively to avoid the Big Chaser's attacks. Halfway through the chase, more Moto Bugs will appear alongside the Big Chaser, which can be destroyed for extra Boost energy. During this part, predicting which lasers the Big Chaser will attack with will become more difficult as it will be offscreen if Sonic is far away from it. The Act will eventually end on its own after running from the Big Chaser for long enough. To get an S-Rank in this Act, the player must get every Quick Step bonus and Ring possible, destroy as many Moto Bugs as possible and avoid damage entirely.

After finishing this Act, Sonic faces off against Eggman's final machine, powered by Wisp energy.

Act 2

Act 2 is played after destroying Eggman's final machine. As the resort finally begins to crumble from the surge of Hyper-Go-On energy, Sonic dashes away down the structure once more, attempting to outrun a black hole. This level does not actually have any kind of ranking at all, instead it is just a basis for the final cutscene as Sonic must continue running down the structure only for the energy surge to inevitably catch up to him.

It is still possible to lose lives in this Act by falling into the pits that appear from pieces of the structure being ripped apart, so the player must still avoid falling by jumping over the pits or by Quick Stepping. Once the camera pans in front of Sonic, there will be no more obstacles to avoid. In Sonic Colours: Ultimate, Tails cannot rescue Sonic from the pits in this Act.
