Story
Sonic Generations
The story begins with the Sonic the Hedgehog of the Classic Era going out for a run through Green Hill Zone, when suddenly there was a tremor. The silent hedgehog disregards this at first, but then catches a glimpse of a mysterious entity emerging in the sky.
20 years later, Sonic's friends are seen in a field preparing a surprise birthday party with Tails in charge of organising things, and Knuckles, Amy, Cream, Rouge, Blaze and the Chaotix helping out. Sonic himself eventually arrives to witness everyone all set up and waiting for him. Tails explains to Sonic that it's difficult to surprise him, but the hedgehog assures him that they got him this time. The fox then gives Sonic a special birthday treat: A specially-wrapped chili dog. Right after taking his first bite, however, Sonic's chili dog was blown away by a mysterious entity known as the Time Eater, who appears in the sky and proceeds to suck all of Sonic's friends into portals. Sonic attempts to stop the entity from doing this, but is swatted away and knocked unconscious.
Sonic regains consciousness to find himself in a mysterious void known as the White Space, and in this void he sees a strange landmark that transports him to Green Hill. Upon blasting through the classic zone, Tails is brought back to life, now traumatized by the experience of "floating without a body in a weird black limbo". Sonic feels that the place he was in seemed awfully familiar, though Tails points out some strange-looking buildings up ahead, which Sonic promptly checks out. As Tails watches him go, he notices Classic Sonic pass by.
Sonic goes through Chemical Plant and Sky Sanctuary, rescuing Amy and Knuckles in the process. In the Chemical Plant, Sonic and Tails take notice to how familiar everything looks, with Tails feeling nervous from looking at the Mega Mack.
Soon, both Sonics find themselves in a dark hallway full of mirrors, and then notice each other, seeing each other as strange reflections in the mirror and mimicking each others moves. As they look at each other, they suddenly hear the echoing voice of Dr. Eggman taunting them, and Classic Sonic storms ahead in a flash. Modern Sonic then realizes that the other Sonic was not his reflection, but literally another Sonic, and tries to keep up with him, only to be shut out. Behind the door, Classic Sonic defeats the Death Egg Robot and then tries to pull Eggman out of the wreckage, only for the Time Eater to show up and take Eggman away, much to the doctor's horror.
Classic Sonic returns to the White Space to meet up with his present-day self, as well as Tails and another version of Tails that shows up out of nowhere. Both of them deduce that the presence of temporal doubles as well as the places and enemies from the past mean they are travelling through time and space. As the Sonics see the Time Eater roam to the next area, the two hedgehogs decide to team up to stop it, eventually rescuing Cream, Rouge and Espio and defeating Shadow.
The two Tailses work out more on what is going on, and learn that as the Time Eater goes through time, it sucks the life and color out of various places and leaves them in the White Space, but as the Sonics go through them, they restore life and color, so the hedgehogs have to work fast. Sonic then finds himself back at Station Square where he goes up against Perfect Chaos again.
Upon emerging victorious, Sonic and the other three notice that one of the Chaos Emeralds has found its way into the White Space, but it is powerless, and the Time Eater cannot touch it. Seeing that the Chaos Emeralds have helped them so many times in the past, they decide to collect them by working fast. By going through the remaining areas and rescuing Blaze, Vector and Charmy as well as defeating Silver, the red Chaos Emerald is restored, and Modern Sonic challenges his past self to a race to it, beating him to it with an Air Boost.
Sonic then goes through a gate that leads him to a showdown with Dr. Eggman in the Egg Dragoon, and emerges victorious. Tails and his past self find it strange that Eggman would be here despite having been kidnapped by the Time Eater back on board the Death Egg, and at that point the Time Eater shows up to kidnap Eggman again.
Eventually, the Sonics collect the remaining Chaos Emeralds and soon arrive at the Time Eater, only to discover that Dr. Eggman, along with his past self, is controlling it (as suspected earlier by Vector). After his recent defeat in Sonic Colors, Eggman discovers the primordial form of the Time Eater in deep space, and decided to use its properties of manipulating time and space to erase his past defeats. However, he realized he would not be able to do this alone, so he asked his past self to help him with modifying the Time Eater for their use. The two of them proceed to smash the two hedgehogs and prepare to finish them off for good, but then all of Sonic's friends show up to give their encouragement, allowing the Sonics to become their Super forms and destroy the Time Eater.
With the Time Eater's defeat, time resets to when Sonic's chili dog was blown away, allowing him to finish it while it was still warm, and allowing the birthday party to continue with the added attendance of Classic Sonic, Classic Tails, Shadow and Silver. Inspired by his future self, Classic Sonic even attempts to do the Air Boost. A time portal leading back to the past appears, with Classic Sonic and Tails going into it, and everybody else saying farewell to them, with Modern Sonic telling Classic Sonic to "enjoy his future".
After the credits, we see that Dr. Eggman and his past self are now stranded in White Space, which is now completely empty as all the places have been returned to their respective places in space-time. The two argue over the plan they came up with, even questioning if they ever win.
Shadow Generations
Shadow Generations takes place at the same time as Sonic Generations, and follows up from the events of Sonic X Shadow Generations: Dark Beginnings.
Shadow the Hedgehog finds himself on the Space Colony ARK. GUN has detected an unusual bio-signature aboard the satellite, and combined with Shadow's own recent nightmares of Maria and Gerald Robotnik's deaths, he believes that Black Doom has somehow returned.
Shadow begins to notice strange things happening to the very fabric of the ARK itself, and gives chase in an effort to catch the culprit.
Shadow eventually catches up to Doom's Eye, who has indeed been behind the strange occurences. Doom's Eye warps Shadow to a strange dimension greatly resembling Radical Highway, where he taunts him and suggests that the Black Comet will return to conquer the Earth once more. Once he's warped back to the Space Colony ARK, Shadow encounters the Fake Chaos Emerald from the events of Sonic Adventure 2. He observes its similarities to his own yellow Chaos Emerald, and takes it. At this point, the events of Sonic Generations begin, with the Time Eater stealing Sonic and friends into White Space.
Shadow is dragged into his own isolated White Space by the Time Eater's rampage. Here, he encounters E-123 Omega at first, but will later find a number of other characters who were not present at Sonic's birthday party, such as Big the Cat, Orbot, and Cubot. After meeting Omega, Shadow is quick to observe a strange object hanging in the sky of his White Space, which Omega identifies as the "Black Moon". This object responds to the presence of Black Doom's power, which Shadow incidentally carried through after fighting Doom's Eye in the warped Radical Highway.
Shadow briefly notices figures that appear to be Maria and Gerald Robotnik in the distance of his White Space, but dismisses them as visions, and simply continues forward in trying to figure out what Black Doom's plot is.
Shadow continues to travel through the different areas of his White Space, each representing a different area from his past (and his future). He is occasionally interrupted by Doom's Eye, who gradually reveals that his plan actually is to let Shadow explore White Space.
Shadow's White Space is full of objects called "Sealing Devices", which contain more of Black Doom's power for Shadow to unlock and use for himself. While these make him more powerful and allow him access to new areas, they also awaken the Black Moon, and incrementally unlock the Black Arms DNA within Shadow. Shadow wants to pursue this strength in order to become strong enough to fight and defeat Black Doom, while Black Doom portends that once Shadow has gained all the power he can, Black Doom will be able to take control of him and use him as his pawn to conquer the Earth, just as he had originally planned 50 years ago. Shadow ignores him and sets to work unlocking more power.
As Shadow explores White Space, he encounters Maria and Gerald Robotnik. The two are surprised by his strength and fighting skill, which he takes to indicate that they're not illusions, but the real Maria and Gerald from long before the incident that resulted in Maria's death and Gerald's descent into madness. He ponders if it's possible to avert their fate, but dismisses the idea until he can take care of Black Doom's plot.
Shadow ends up accidentally crossing into Sonic's White Space, where Sonic challenges him for his Chaos Emerald (as per his boss fight in the Sonic Generations campaign). Shadow and Sonic fight, and Sonic wins. He takes Shadow's Emerald and runs. Rouge chastizes Shadow for his failure, before Shadow reveals that he had simply thrown the fight to let Sonic have the fake Emerald. Rouge agrees to take the real thing to Sonic once Shadow is finished with Black Doom.
After obtaining the Doom Wings power, the Black Moon finally unleashes its full power and transforms Shadow's White Space into the Doom Zone. Shadow struggles against the Doom Wing's power as Black Doom calls him to the Black Moon for them to face each other so they can become one. With the help of Maria, Shadow is able to resist the control of Black Doom. He enters the Black Moon, fights Black Doom in his final form as Neo Devil Doom, defeats him with his Doom Powers, and emerges victorious.
With Black Doom's influence on the time anomaly gone, Maria and Gerald fade back into their own point in time before Shadow is able to do anything to avert their fates. Shadow is determined to do anything to stop them from leaving, but Maria reassures him that they will see each other again, and that she will always be in his heart. Unable to save them, Shadow runs off ahead of Rouge on her way back to Sonic's White Space in order to give Sonic Shadow's Chaos Emerald. As he runs past her, she notices a tear from him fly onto her cheek.
Gameplay
Sonic Generations
Main article: Sonic Generations#Gameplay |
Sonic Generations is largely the same game as previously released in 2011 in that players control both the pre-Sonic Adventure and post-Adventure designs for Sonic the Hedgehog in remastered levels from Sonic's previous adventures, however features a number of additional changes. Both Sonics are capable of performing the Drop Dash - for Classic Sonic it is an equippable Skill that is assigned to Skill Set A by default but can be taken off to make room for other Skills, while for Modern Sonic it is a permanent part of his moveset. Lives, referred to as "Challenge Tries", can be toggled on or off in the options menu. The game also features 3 save slots instead of the 1 in the original.
In addition to collecting Red Star Rings (which now have on-screen indicators when collected), players can also find and collect Chao. Each Act in the game features three Chao hidden in various places - while most are out in the open, some may require the player to look around their surroundings or chase after the Chao in a particular section. Chao that have been collected will freely roam around their corresponding stage gates in White Space, and the Collection Room will track the Chao that have been found as well as offer hints on where to find any missing Chao.
The story's script has received numerous rewrites, including more references to past games (such as Sonic acknowledging the Time Stones) and added lines for Modern Sonic when each of his friends are rescued. Most dialogue has also been re-recorded with the most recent voice actors as of 2024. The 30-Second Trial mode, available via Online Mode in the original game, has been removed.
Shadow Generations
Shadow Generations focuses solely on Shadow the Hedgehog as a playable character, who plays similar to Modern Sonic in Sonic Generations. Each stage has two Acts just like Sonic Generations, though instead of controlling different versions of Shadow, the player controls the same version of Shadow through both Acts - instead, the Acts differentiate themselves in structure, with Act 1 being solely 3D stages much like Modern Sonic's stages, and Act 2 being entirely 2D similar to Classic Sonic's stages. The game does not divide Shadow's stages into eras like Sonic Generations does.
Each of Shadow's stages and bosses can be accessed through White Space much like the stages in Sonic Generations, however whereas White Space is a hub played from a 2D perspective for both Sonics, Shadow's version of White Space is a massive 3D hub world styled after the Open Zones from Sonic Frontiers, with many level objects to get Shadow to different places, mini-game challenges to complete, and chests that are opened with Collection Keys found in the Acts and Challenge Acts. White Space starts out small, but expands as the player progresses through the game.
Compared to Modern Sonic, Shadow does not run as fast but has tighter turning. He is also capable of performing the Boost, Homing Attack and Stomp just like Sonic, however has a number of exclusive abilities he can use - he can use Chaos Spears as a projectile attack to stun enemies and hit targets from a distance, and when he gathers enough energy he can activate Chaos Control to stop time for 5 seconds, which can help in some sections with platforming or moving hazards, and is a required action in certain sections. Another major addition to Shadow's abilities are the Doom Powers - mutations that are unlocked as the player progresses through the story. These abilities are commonly used for added mobility, such as using Doom Surf to cross water or Doom Morph to move through certain types of surfaces.
Stages
Compared to Sonic Generations, Shadow Generations not only features stages from games Shadow has appeared in, but also includes stages from games released after Sonic Generations.
