Fire Breath
Game: Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Level: Angel Island Zone (mini-boss)
Hits to defeat: 6

The Fire Breath (ファイヤーブレス)[1] is the first mini-boss of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, fought in Angel Island Zone Act 1. It makes an early appearance halfway through the Act, where an armada of Fire Breaths sets the entire Zone on fire, and then the boss is properly fought later at the end.

Strategy

True to its name, the Fire Breath has a flamethrower and bomb launchers, though it only uses the latter if the player is playing as Knuckles. Its sole attack pattern is to hover down to the right of the screen and breathe fire once, then hover into the air and to the other side of the screen to repeat its attack pattern. If the player has the Fire Shield, they can just go below the mini-boss and deck it. If not, they must wait until it comes down, then hit it a few times while watching out for the flamethrower. After six hits, the sub-boss is destroyed.

When Knuckles fights the machine, he does it underground, and the boss has a new attack: It will fire three bombs after shooting the flame, which will come crashing down one after the other. The player must be careful and wait for the bombs to have finished firing before attacking the boss, then carefully avoid them when they fall back down.
