Super-Speed Stage

From Sonic Retro

The Super-Speed Stage in Kingdom Valley.

Super-Speed StagesMedia:Sonic06 360 US manual.pdf[1] (超高速ステージMedia:Sonic06 ps3 jp manual.pdf[2]) are a feature exclusive to Sonic's gameplay in the 2006 Sonic the Hedgehog game. The game engine itself drives Sonic forward at a breakneck pace, leaving the player only in control of left/right movement and jumping, and is unable to use any other move besides the Light Dash.

Game appearances

Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

Super-Speed Stages occur four times in Sonic '06, at the end of the levels:

These sections are notoriously difficult to control for many players. Crashing into any obstacles at all would result in Sonic losing Rings and often send him careening right off the side of the level, which would thwart many efforts to achieve an S-Rank on a stage. Sonic is also unable to attack any enemies and will take damage upon colliding with one. As there are no checkpoints in Super-Speed Stages, dying results in having to replay the entire section from the beginning.

Other games

Similar sections appear in Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations, but they are much easier to control because they use the Quick Step mechanic introduced in Sonic Unleashed, and allow all of Sonic's moves to be used except the Drift, allowing him to take out enemies.

Super-Speed Stages make an official return in Sonic Lost World, however they have been retooled slightly in order to avoid control problems, and all of Sonic's attacks are available. The Wii U/Steam version prevents the use of Super Sonic in such sections and will de-transform him if he enters one, however the Nintendo 3DS version allows the use of Super Sonic within these sections.
