Overview
After sailing up the river rapids from Lake Crystal, Tails secures the Sea Fox somewhere and advances into the subterranean caves of the Polly Mountains. This place is pitch black; while technically accessible without appropriate visors, the fox can't make much progress through Polly Mountain 2 unless he's wearing the Night Scope, which renders the area in monochrome red (but at least visible) IR hues.
The lava caverns under the mountains aren't the winding, claustrophobic variety seen in Volcanic Tunnel, but rather massive dark voids filled with cinder-laden updrafts and robot bats. This stage includes a particularly nefarious platforming segment where Tails has to blast his own footholds out of the destructible rockfaces in order to climb up the cave walls. Just make sure to leave a section at the bottom to stand on!
