Sonic R is a 1998 LCD game created by Tiger. The game features a directional pad which only has and and 2 buttons, "jump", and "run". There are also buttons for toggling the power and sound on/off and to display the score. Two AA batteries are required to play the game. This game is based off another game of the same name on Sega Saturn. The background of the game bears a resemblance to Resort Island, a level from the Saturn game.
Gameplay
Sonic R features Sonic the Hedgehog as the main playable character. Unlike the Saturn game there are no other racers, despite artwork for Tails being featured in the instruction manual. The game has a total of five levels (Resort Island, Radical City, Regal Ruin, Reactive Factory, and Radiant Emerald), each of which have a 90-second time limit. Obstacles such as tires litter the course so these are best to be avoided or jumped over. Occasionally, accelerator pads will appear which will speed up the player's character if it is stepped on. Rings, Sonic Tokens, and Chaos Emeralds can also be collected for bonus points. Completing the track in under 90 seconds will also reward Bonus points. Not finishing the level within the time limit will not end the race, but the player will not gain Bonus points.
Points
If all 5 Chaos Emeralds are collected a bonus of 1,000 points will be rewarded. Below is a points table that shows how other points are awarded.
