Sonic Hopper! was a large attraction that was located at Sega Republic in Dubai. It was a Sonic the Hedgehog-themed drop tower with a twist, and opened as one of 9 opening-day attractions at the park[1].
After the closure of Sega Republic on June 1, 2017, the ride was repurposed for its replacement in VR Park Dubai as Burj Drop, with the addition of virtual-reality headsets to fit the VR theme.
Description
“ | Take a ride with one of the world’s best-known video game characters, Sonic the Hedgehog, and feel the jaw-dropping sensation of a 9 metre drop - with a twist! | „ |
— Sega Republic official website[2] |
Ride experience
Sonic Hopper! was a 9-meter drop tower attraction. However, unlike most drop towers, it had the ability for the cars to rotate around the tower as it went up and shot back down from a corkscrew feature, which gave the ride a twist compared to other drop towers. There were five ride vehicles painted in different colours that could hold a maximum of two riders, for a total of 10 riders altogether.
On the top of the ride sat a giant statue of Sonic the Hedgehog holding a flag with the Sega Republic logo on it.
