- Not to be confused with Death Egg II from Sonic the Fighters.
Death Egg mk.II Zone is the fifth and final Zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode II. After destroying his battleship in Sky Fortress Zone, the duo of Sonic and Tails finally reach Dr. Eggman's ultimate plan: the rebuilding of the Death Egg last seen in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles, and this time he's built it around the Little Planet from Sonic the Hedgehog CD.
Rather than being a single-Act boss rush like E.G.G. Station Zone, Death Egg mk.II Zone consists of a regular Act and a boss Act with the final boss. Just like the original Death Egg, the level contains gravity switching, albeit at a somewhat grander scale as Sonic and Tails will be running along not only the floor and ceiling, but also the walls as they run through long stretches of corridors, with the only real obstacles being spikes. Uniquely for this game, the player's and inputs are reversed when upside-down, although horizontal movement is unaffected. There are no enemies in this Zone, just Eggman and Metal Sonic once again.
The first Act sees the duo fighting Metal and Eggman together at the halfway point, and must dodge Metal's energy attacks. Attack Metal when he is discharging from his energy attack. Eggman cannot be attacked in this part, and acts as a sort of shield for Metal while he charges attacks to hit the duo. At the very end of the first Act, Metal Sonic challenges Sonic and Tails to a Stardust Speedway-style death race, complete with a cover of the Bad Future theme. The race is relatively short compared to the source material, and can easily be won using the Rolling Combo. The boss Act is the final boss against Eggman in the heart of the Death Egg mk.II.
