Sonic Classic Collection is a Nintendo DS compilation featuring several Mega Drive/Genesis Sonic games. The ability to save mid-game and resume from that point has been added.

The compilation was confirmed to be in development November 11th of 2009 when the compilation was listed, along with the included game list, on the bbfc website.[1] On November 18th Nintendo of Australia posted a news article which revealed the compilation was to be released on the Nintendo DS.[2] It was released on March 2, 2010 in North America. Game List

Emulation

Sonic Classic Collection uses a modified version of jEnesisDS by Stephan Dittrich, who now works for SEGA and was the lead DS programmer of this game. The ROMs used in this game were modified to not show features that a single DS couldn't use, such as 2 Player modes in Sonic 2 and Sonic 3, as well as other things such as Sonic 2's options screen and Level Select. Additionally, the Start button on the DS is generally disabled, with the player pausing the game by using the touch screen, which actually pauses the emulator. As a result, several, but not all of the original cheats are rendered defunct. The ROMs used also had some sort of "lock" which restricted the ROMs to only play using jEnesisDS.

Extras

An art gallery featuring 30 Sonic pictures previously seen in Sonic Jam and Sonic Gems Collection, and a credits screen are the only extras that appeared in the final game. The following were confirmed by the Australian Ratings Board, but never appeared in the final:

Cheats

Since the games in the collection were modified for use on the Nintendo DS, some cheat codes that worked in the Mega Drive originals do not work here. All cheats work in Sonic The Hedgehog, Sonic & Knuckles, and Knuckles in Sonic 2. In Sonic The Hedgehog 2, Sonic The Hedgehog 3, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles, none of the cheat codes work because the roms were modified for use on the DS. Action Replay codes exist, which enable one to enter the level select screens and enables the debug mode

Bugs

  • Frameskip means that any two-frame animations like water tops or Sonic 2 shields often don't animate.
  • Launch Base Zone music loops back to start a little bit early.
  • Sonic's jump in Sonic 2 has a 'pop' sound at the start.
  • Sonic and Knuckle's boss music is from Sonic 3.
  • Launch Base Zone's Act 1 to 2 transition looks weird due to stair-step animation being used, which was implimented to avoid graphical glitches. This is also present in Lava Reef Zone's boss.
  • When Knuckles goes through water pipes in Launch Base Zone Act 2, sometimes he'll appear completely outside the pipes.
  • When you get a 1-Up, the track resets after the jingle ends. This same thing happens in the iPod Classic port.
  • If you get a 1-Up or a Continue during the score tally, the music will be interrupted, then restarted after the score tally. Works in both end of a level or end of special stage.
  • Competiton was taken out of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, but a glitch allows you to enter it. Enable the Debug Mode and Level Select codes and go to Launch Base Act 2. Cause various glitches and kill yourself until you run out of lives. When the game resets, the option "Competition" Will be avalible. NOTE: Competition is incomplete in this version of S3&K it is glitchy and incomplete. Some levels MAY or may NOT be able to be completed. The reason competition is here is becuase in the Beta of this game, Wi Fi and multiplayer was avalible, thats why the picture of Sonic and Knuckles in Mushroom Hill in the game is like that.

Major Glitches , Secrets , and Cheats Competition Unlocked In S3&K in Sonic Classic Collection, only 1 Player is avalible at start. But if you use Debug in Launch Base alot, it is posible to acess an incomplete, glitchy Competiton 2 Player Selection. First, Complete the game as any character ( I recommend Sonic ) Once done Activate Debug Mode and go to Launch Base Zone, get to Act 2 and near the boss, cause various glitches everywhere. Anything you can do to mess up the level. Lose 1 life and continue doing glitches WITH DEBUG BY THE BOSS AREA until you run out of lives. Once this is done, the game will restart and at the Main Menu, Competition will be avalible+. + You cannot go back to 1 Player after you unlock Competition. To play 1 Player, Quit the Game and start in up again. Competiton plays Sonic 3 (Alone)'s mini boss music, the C,Mon! song. Once you select a level, Sonic 3 (Alone)'s intro music will play, when the music stops there is no music just sound effects. Competition was once going to be in the Sonic Classic Collection version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. But either due to release date issues ( that'll explain why the 3 movies that were going to be in the game weren't there) or to the fact that they couldn't fit 2 Player into it. But Competition is incomplete. The bottom screen (the 2nd player's screen) is all glitchy and Sonic 3's music is still intact. It is unknown why Sonic 3's music is intact ad not deleted becuase Sonic 3's ending theme was not in Sonic 3 & Knuckles but in the Sound Test. These two Tracks, Sonic 3's mini boss and intro are hidden.
