According to Sonic Cult development for Sonic X-treme began on Sega Genesis even before Sonic 3D Blast was in development. Chris Senn released some concept art and it looks similar to Sonic 3D Blast due to it having a overhead view. However, unlike Sonic 3D the movement seems to be restricted to set paths rather than wide open maps. From the single screen shown it's impossible to determine if this is entirely true, or if there were more open areas to move in.
